Mobile Phone Weekly News Round-up

Following the flurry of new mobile phone official announcements and unofficial leaks we’ve experienced over the last few weeks, this week is a little quieter, with just Samsung making the F400 official and Nokia making some noise about the upcoming N78. We say noise, but it’s only thanks to some online spotters that the promotional page and the handset specs were found on Nokia’s N-series website. It’s a Symbian phone with A-GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera and 3G with HSDPA connectivity by the way, but what’s the story with the numbers above the keys? In some pictures they’re there, in others they aren’t, are they built into the backlight?

Samsung’s F400 a dual slide (think N95) music phone with a set of stereo speakers hidden away and revealed by pushing the slider down. Powering these little noise-makers is an ICEPower amplifier by Bang and Olufson, a purely digital affair which has a low power consumption but plenty of power. The phone also comes with a 3 megapixel camera, 3G and HSDPA, a 3.5mm jack plug socket and a circular d-pad which looks like a speaker!

Nokia bigwigs should be patting each other on the back this week after having come top of the pile in a survey-you’ve-never-heard-of called ‘Brands we Love, Brands we Hate’, run by some marketing company suits who are eager to poach some new clients. Interestingly, Nokia’s own N-gage gaming service turned up close to the bottom of the list (meaning they hate it) along with McDonald’s and The Sun newspaper. Seems a little harsh for the innocent gaming service! Nokia expect to receive unsolicited pitches from said marketing company soon.

Some interesting new tech developments have been discussed this week, the most exciting of which is 3M and Samsung’s tiny projector which may find its way into mobile phones sometime soon. This little gadget will let you project an image or presumably, a video on to a surface directly from your phone, something which those who give presentations for their jobs will welcome, and everyone else will use for watching downloaded video in the pub. Feel free to watch 3M’s buttock-clenchingly awful promo video on their website and check out the circa 1980’s remote control style phones they use too. Nokia provide the second interesting piece of information from the tech-side by suggesting that by 2010, half of their phones will feature GPS, including the non-smartphone handsets.

Sony Ericsson have employed the talents of Usher (the singer responsible for songs such as You Make Me Wanna and Confessions, Part II rather than someone to show the to their seats each day) to promote their forthcoming Walkman-focused phones, the W980i and W350. These unusual phones will need all the help they can get in order to convince the attention-span-challenged they are in fact phones and not just music players. Usher will be providing exclusive content and a competition to win the opportunity to join him at a video shoot.

Concept phones are always an interesting prospect as it’s always fun to see what the manufacturers could be selling us mobile users in ten years time. However, not all concepts make you want it now rather than never and often shy away from the cool, shiny futuristic look. Provoke Design, one of Nokia’s preferred design houses, have come up with these creations projected for 2012, including a couple-centric phone and something far to pink to publish a picture of here, but these become almost desirable when your other choice is the S-Series. Its concept blurb talks of today’s phone designs leaving a lot to be desired; however we humbly suggest they are not the people to change this, as the S-Series makes use of wood in its construction and resembles an ugly version of Sony Ericsson’s W580, making every other phone pictured in this article look light-years ahead in design – somewhat defeating the object of this supposed design revolution!

Vodafone Buys Mobile Phone Social Network ZYB For $50 Million

Vodafone has bought the mobile social networking service ZYB for €31.5 million ($50 million) in a move that will see the Danish company become a part of Vodafone’s Internet Services Division.

The Danish company started up in 2005 with investment of €3 million and offered a free online storage space for users to back up their mobile phone contacts. ZYB later developed into a social networking site when the company realised the potential of having all of a users mobile phone contacts stored in the same database: Users could, if they chose, link up to one another by seeing who else has the same contacts in their database.

ZYB also offers other services such as storing messages, calendar information, and a phonebook to launch later in the year that will display the real-time location of your friends and the time zone they’re currently in.

ZYB’s services, beyond the simple backing up of data, is to allow you to connect to other mobile phone users online and, increasingly, connect with them more easily on your phone using services such as the ZYB Phone Book.

The 12 Months Free Contract And Its Utilities

Mobile phone deals are getting better with each day. The availability of 12 months free contracts can be taken to elucidate this point further. As it is, using contract mobile phones is a great way of staying connected to the best of entertainment, news, views, and opinions. More and more people are using some of the latest 3G mobiles and that too without spending exorbitantly for the same. One could say that the contract deals have brought the latest and the best in communications technology to a greater cross-section of end-users. Using a high-end phone is not limited to the upwardly mobile any longer.

The 12 months free contracts are a part of many such attractive offers. Many of the leading service providers in different parts of the globe have realized the importance of such benefits to draw more and more users to their fold. In the UK, for instance, providers such as Orange, O2, 3, Vodafone, Virgin and T are devising and delivering many such deals to their base of subscribers.

These deals are being devised on the latest models of mobiles from leading names in the sector. From Nokia and Sony Ericsson to Samsung, LG, and Motorola, the latest and the best handsets from all these brands can be obtained as part of 12 months free contracts.

Avid users of phones are the main beneficiaries of such deals. They can now judge their specific requirements and needs as well as their talking habits. They can then browse through the different offers that are being showcased by the leading providers in many a retailing site and match the tariff plans and line rentals with their requirements. They can then select a deal on the handset of their choice - a deal that maximizes their utility subject to the constraints of costs and talking habits. It has been observed that many people - after analyzing their requirements in the above mentioned manner - tend to go in for the 12 months free contracts on the latest models. This way they can get to own a slick and high-end mobile with the additional cost advantages being offered by the providers and retailers. It is a win-win situation for them either way.

GPS Navigation is Most Sought After Cell Phone Feature

Aside from regular stuff like sending text messages and making calls, it seems that the most highly sought after feature on a mobile phone is GPS navigation. This is according to a recent survey of Taiwanese consumers conducted by Canalysis. It may not be necessarily indicative of the rest of the world, but it does show that people want to know where they are going.

Of those surveyed, 80% were aware of what satellite navigation could do. Furthermore, 60% said that they have used the web to search for directions, printing them out before heading out on a trip. Wouldn't it much more handy if you could get real-time navigation from a GPS-enabled cell phone? I guess that's why they really want maps and navigation on their mobile phones.

GPS navigation on a cell phone came out to be more sought after than mobile TV or mobile music. Should AT&T put less emphasis on the recent mobile TV launch and more emphasis on pointing us in the right direction? What about the ability to geotag pictures taken from camera phones?

BlackBerry mixes it with Apple

We're going to be enjoying some titanic battles this summer: athletes will be pushing through the pain barrier in Beijing to come home with a gold medal; football teams from across Europe will be kicking lumps out of one another in Austria and Switzerland at Euro 2008; and Apple and Research in Motion, the Canadian company behind the wildly popular BlackBerry mobile email device, will be slugging it out for the hearts, minds and wallets of consumers.

With Apple widely expected to launch an updated model of the iPhone in June, featuring faster internet access as well as a host of new applications and programs, other mobile phone makers are pulling out all the stops to make sure they don't end up trailing in Apple's wake.

Research in Motion, in particular, is concious of this. Although it has more than 14 million global subscribers to its BlackBerry "push-email" service, whereby messages are automatically delivered to the phone rather than the user having to download them each time, almost two-thirds of these are "enterprise" subscriptions - essentially, businessmen and women.

But hang on a second. That means more than a third of BlackBerry users aren't "enterprise" customers. They are people like you and me who simply want to be able to access their emails on the go. Phones are becoming more like pocket-sized computers, capable of carrying out multiple tasks, and email has become absolutely critical to the way we live our daily lives.

Even for those people who aren't captains of industry, the ability to check messages quickly and easily on their phone is fast becoming a "must have" feature, rather than simply an optional extra. And let's face it, no-one does mobile email like BlackBerry.

Reaching out to a new audience is crucial to Research in Motion's ongoing success. Apple plans to launch new software that will give its iPhone BlackBerry-like push-email capabilities ideal for the workplace, and it has already won plaudits from consumers for the design and interface of its phone-cum-iPod-cum-internet browser.

That's why Research in Motion has launched its most consumer-friendly handset yet: the Bold. It's not due in shops until later this summer, but expect it to start a fruity turf war between Apple and BlackBerry. The Bold is BlackBerry's attempt to cast off its business suit and don some casual clothes for a change.

It maintains the email capabilities so beloved by BlackBerry users and builds a swathe of really great features into the device that you might find on a "normal" phone.

Bold owners will be able to watch videos on the go; surf the internet at faster speeds than they currently can on an iPhone, using the 3G mobile phone network and super-slick HSDPA as well as Wi-Fi; find a nice local restaurant or cosy pub using the built-in GPS and mapping software; take pictures using the two-megapixel camera (the same resolution camera used on the iPhone); and - this is the crucial bit - download their music collection to the device from their iTunes library. Take that, Apple!

Even the design of the Bold is a nod to the iPhone, with its piano-black finish, rounded corners and silver flashes. Unlike the iPhone, however, there's no touchscreen. Instead BlackBerry is sticking with its tried, trusted and adored qwerty keyboard layout, which allows dedicated CrackBerry addicts to speedily touch-type emails. Rumour has it, however, that a touchscreen BlackBerry, dubbed "Thunder", is in the works and could hit stores by the end of the year.

The screen, with its 480 by 320 resolution, is bright, crisp and clear, albeit smaller than on an iPhone. The Bold's processor is also slightly faster than that used by the Apple device, which should keep programs running smoothly. And, unlike the iPhone, the Bold allows users to multi-task: you'll be able to use the mapping software, surf the web or write an email while making a phone call.

While there's only 1GB of memory built into the Bold - compared to the 8GB and 16GB versions of the iPhone currently offered by Apple - you can simply add a memory card to bump that up to 16GB, which is more than enough for a couple of movies and a lengthy playlist of songs.

Of course, the Bold, like all BlackBerrys, has a major downside: the possibility of addiction. The ability compulsively to check emails every five minutes is just too tempting. Even if you resolve not to check it at weekends or in the evening, the blinking light that signals an unread message will be impossible to resist. Madonna recently admitted that she and husband Guy Ritchie take their BlackBerrys to bed with them, and sleep with them under their pillows.

BlackBerry users over on the forums at CrackBerry.com proudly swap stories of just how big a role the device plays in their life. Many talk about their being three people in their relationships, while another writes of how he used his BlackBerry to email family and friends that he was having a heart attack while being rushed to hospital by ambulance.

Don't say we didn't warn you.

UK flooded with 'fake' mobile phones

The UK is being flooded by thousands of unofficial or counterfeit mobile phones through online auctions, according to analysis of eBay.

Nokia was by far the most targeted company when it came to unofficial or fake phones, followed by LG and Samsung.

The analysis by Envisional concentrated on three of the most popular phones on the market at the moment, the Nokia N95, the LG Viewty, and the Samsung F700. It looked at the number of auctions taking place through ebay.co.uk over a seven day period.

It found that there were 2,250 sellers of the Nokia N95 with many offered as unlocked, showing that the auctions were of unofficially sold phones with the possibility of being fake.

Ten per cent of the sellers were offering goods into the UK which were not official, as they originated from the Hong Kong and US. These were also more likely to be counterfeit, the report claimed.

"It is vitally important that consumer awareness of counterfeit goods is raised. It can be very difficult for buyers to tell the difference between a fake and genuine product," said Elizabeth May, vice-president of the Authentics Foundation.

"However even when consumers are aware that an item is fake there is often an ambiguous relationship with counterfeiters an buyers are prepared to purchase a product as a good deal regardless of its origin."

The vast majority of Viewty and Samsung handsets were based in the UK with no individual sellers selling large number of products.

However all the manufacturers had problems with fake batteries. A large number of N95 batteries were on offer, with sellers dominated by a few individuals selling hundreds of items.

This showed that these products could be cheap generics which were poor quality, dangerous and with potential to damage the phone, the report said. The LG and Viewty battery auctions also carried the potential of being fake products.

"Too many consumers are unaware of the disreputable sources of counterfeit goods, particularly in the electronics space," said Jonathan Robinson, chief operating officer of NetNames, Envisional's sister company.

Robinson said that online auction sites now gave counterfeiter opportunities that were not available in the past, and that manufacturers needed to be aware and monitor the situation even if they decided not to act on the information.

He said: "If a consumer has a bad experience with a product with your branding on it, it will not necessarily occur to them that it is counterfeit."

"It will simply create a negative perception which can quickly spread across product reviews, blogs and other social media causing untold brand damage," he added.

Nokia foresees GPS ubiquity on mobile phones

Nokia says it will include GPS navigation in the majority of its business and multimedia handsets by 2012.

"Nokia is planning to ship 35 million GPS units this year and many more location-enabled phones that use cell-towers to orient themselves on the map," says Michael Halbherr, the head of Nokia's location-based activities. "You will see few 'E' or 'N' Series phones without GPS," he adds.

Halbherr claims the strategy will benefit all Nokia users, even those without GPS phones as they'll still benefit as GPS phone users update Nokia Maps just by moving around.

"Location will ultimately be in every device," Halbherr declared, not just the half of phones with special GPS chips.

In addition to GPS chips, Nokia's strategy involves pushing Wi-Fi enabled devices that use local wireless network antennas to pinpoint the phone's position.

Nokia currently sells five models with built-in GPS and has unveiled four more which will ship in the coming months.

However free-to-use services such as Google Maps have also been driving the uptake of GPS phones.

10 Designer Mobile Phones That Will Make You Cooler

Did you think it was bad when you found out that your girlfriend was spending $300 on each pair of jeans that she wears? Do you still argue with her about the fact that she thinks she needs $400 designer brand shoes and $1000 designer name handbags? Well, you can add another accessory to the list of items that you’re going to be footing a fortune for if you ever end up having to support the lady love of your life: the designer name cell phone. From Levi’s to Prada, designer mobile phones are making their way from the runway to the must-have category of every woman’s life. And you know what the worst part is? You’re probably going to actually like this expensive accessory.

Here are ten of the top designer brand mobile phones interesting consumers today:

1. Prada KE850.
This designer phone has gotten a lot of attention in the fashion world but has gained even more sidelong glances from the tech world. That’s because it is strikingly similar to the oh-so-popular iPhone and it was released around the same time last year. A touch-screen phone put out by LG, it is popular with European fashionistas. It was originally not-too-hot among tech fiends because it offered much the same experience as the iPhone at double the cost but now that prices are down, it’s considered a designer alternative that could work for trendy techies.

2. Levi’s Cell Phones.

The first Levi’s brand cell phone was released last year and tended to fall short of most reviewers’ expectations. Although it looked good, it lacked a lot of the advanced function that you would want from your primary mobile phone. Not to be discouraged, Levi’s is back again with a brand-new phone that seems to be a better alternative than the original. It’s a 3G slider phone that’s being sold in France through Orange and it seems to combine both style and function which is the major goal of a designer brand phone. Levi’s also has a new limited-availability diamond-encrusted designer phone for the rich called Red Tab.

3. Dolce and Gabbana Razr V3i.
If you’re dating a gal that has got to have only the best, then she’s bound to have at least eyed this phone. Considering that only 1,000 of these pricey babies were made and released into boutiques, it’s not too likely that she got her hands on one unless she happens to be Sharon Stone. If you really want to wow her, there are some unlocked versions floating around the market for around $400 each.

4. Georgio Armani Samsung.

This is considered to be the most stylish of the fashion cell phones. It’s also the one that is most suitable for men so if you’re a guy that’s looking to invest some money in a phone with a brand name attached to it, this is probably the phone for you. The drawbacks are that it’s a slow phone which lacks 3G capabilities but other than that it’s a highly functional phone that both genders are in love with.

5. Beyonce Upstage.
Beyonce isn’t a fashion designer but women are always eyeing what she’s wearing on the red carpet so it’s no surprise that they took an interest in the designer phone branded after her. Released late last year, this phone is primarily a music phone put out by Samsung that has some special features such as coming pre-loaded with Beyonce content. Leave this one to the girls!

6. MOTORAZR V6 Ferrari phone.

High-end fashion designers aren’t the only designers who have set mobile phone trends in the past. Car designers also raced to get in on the name brand phone action. Aston Martin and Lamborghini both came out with phones in 2006 but it was the Ferrari phone that really seemed to succeed at marrying style and function in a relatively affordable fashion. Released about a year ago in limited edition format, this phone can be found in the online market today for between $500 and $600. If you can’t have the car, you might as well have the phone.

7. Juicy Couture Sidekick II.

This was one of the very first fashion phones to hit the market back in 2005. It’s a really simple phone in terms of designer branding; it’s just got the Juicy Couture name all over the front screen. However it remains a popular choice in the United States as an affordable designer brand phone selling for between $100 and $200 online.

8. My411C LuluCastagnate Phone.

Here is something that’s truly different in the market. It is a designer phone for kids (primarily girls) created by a French fashion-and-more designer to provide youth with a phone that really stands out. Lulu Castagnette, the artist that designed the phone’s exterior look, is a fashion designer for women and children who has also designed everything from textiles to home accessories. The phone itself is simple but fashion-forward kids don’t really need function so much as looks.

9. Chanel Concept Phone.
The Chancel Choco phone isn’t actually available yet but people are impressed with the technological concept behind this mobile phone design. This super-slim, minimalist cell phone is intended to incorporate fiber optic technology that will reveal your keypad beneath two thin glass sheets. It’s something that’s still being worked on – and it will be expensive when it finally hits the shelves – but it’s something that Coco herself would wear if she was accessorizing in the twenty-first century.

10. Tommy Hilfiger / Ristomatti Ratia phone.
Falling into the category of well-kept secrets is a rumor about a Nokia phone designed in combination by Tommy Hilfiger and Finnish fashion designer Ristomatti Ratia. There is still no official press release about this phone but the rumors have been circulating for a few months and there seem to be regular hints here and there that the phone is indeed in the works. In terms of designer name phones that are producing curiosity, this one tops the list.

Vodafone targets ad dollars with new GPS

Vodafone New Zealand marketing bosses have eyes on next-generation Global Positioning Satellite software for mobile phones to boost advertising revenue.

But they say this latest mobile phone accessory - joining internet access, MP3 mobile players and cameras - will not be a big earner for some time yet.

GPS technology looks set to be the next big thing for premium phones, giving customers the ability to use phones to find where they are driving or walking and the location they are trying to reach.

In a deal with Australian online mapping firm Compass, Vodafone has started offering the service on Blackberry phones.

The market for GPS mobiles is likely to take off later this year with Apple's iPhone expected to be GPS capable.

Initially the Vodafone deal with Compass will be limited to revenue from corporate customers who would pay $2.50 a day for casual use or $10 a month to use Compass.

The service is an early sampling by Vodafone of the potential growth from the new GPS-capable phones.

As GPS technology for mobile phones develops - it has never met forecasts to take off in the past - so too will the value of the information it provides. For Vodafone, one of the big benefits will be developing advertising revenue.

Vodafone Products general manager Kursten Shalfoon said more money would be raised through attaching marketing information.

"What it means is that where we will now say, "Turn left at this street," we will give instructions to turn left at the, say, Caltex, and a promotion will spring up that says if you buy petrol there now you will be able to get a special price."

He acknowledged the dangers of including too many marketing messages on the premium service and annoying customers.

Vodafone Denies Plans to Buy South Africa's MTN

Vodafone has refuted media reports over the weekend that the company is considering a spoiler bid for South Africa's MTN - which is currently in talks with India's Bharti Airtel over a possible takeover.

Two UK newspapers has reported that Vodafone is working on a bid for the company. The Sunday Times reported that Vodafone's CEO, Arun Sarin had told his acquisition team, led by former UBS banker Warren Finegold, to seek ways to buy South Africa based MTN - while the Telegraph reported similar without naming its sources.

"We have no intention of pursuing a bid for MTN," a Vodafone spokesman said - denying the reports.

Earlier this month, Vodafone was understood to be in talks with MTN over proposals to acquire the company's international assets outside South Africa.

Vodafone - which jointly owns South African mobile operator, Vodacom with the landline operator, Telekom - was recently reported to have become increasingly frustrated with delays in a planed sale of 15% of Telkom. The sale would have pushed Vodafone's effective control of the company above 50%, giving it control of the business without having to spend a significant sum on an acquisition. Vodacom will also need to divest a substantial stake by the end of this year to a Black Empowerment group, further diluting both companies stake in the company.

The earlier talks were confirmed by an MTN insider and by an independent source in the South African financial services sector, who is familiar with the detail of the discussions. Although Vodafone denied any talks were carrying one, MTN did confirm that Vodafone is one of several companies they are talking to - as part of normal business relations.

MTN also has very little overlap with Vodafone in their respective international markets.

RIM BlackBerry Bold/BlackBerry 9000 makes official debut

Say hello to the RIM BlackBerry Bold. *Cue dramatic music* You may know it as the RIM BlackBerry 9000, but today, Research in Motion officially took the wraps off the highly anticipated and much-rumored smartphone, complete with a new name. The "Bold" is in reference to the smartphone's gorgeous display, but it's also bold in that it represents a number of new moves for the company. Oh, BlackBerry Bold, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways.

The bold and the beautiful
As we just mentioned, the device gets its name from its screen. The BlackBerry Bold features a half-VGA (480x320 pixel resolution), 65,000-color display, and during some initial product testing, research group participants repeatedly called the screen "bold" and "brilliant." The Brilliant moniker didn't really jive with the company, thus the BlackBerry Bold was born.

So just how bold is it? Well, RIM stopped by our office late last week to show us the device, and let me just tell you, I was absolutely blown away. I can pretty much say I've never seen a better-looking display on a smartphone. Colors pop off the screen, and it's really amazing how sharp and crisp everything looks on the display. We watched a couple of videos, and for the first time, we didn't notice any of that pixelation or blurriness that you typically get with phones. In addition, the menu interface has been revamped with a much more modern look and icons.

Also, as you can see from the images, the BlackBerry Bold boasts a new design. It's more elegant than models past, with curvier edges and a silver trim that complements the black casing. If you turn it over, you'll also notice that the back has a leatherette texture. No more slick plastic and RIM will sell replaceable backplates in different colors, including blue, gray, and red, if you want to spruce up your phone a bit. Sizewise, the BlackBerry Bold measures 4.5 inches tall by 2.6 inches wide by 0.5 inch deep and weighs 4.7 ounces. Kevin Michaluk over at Crackberry.com took a gamble, bought one off eBay, and posted a hands-on review. He made a good comparison and likened the device to the Motorola Q9h.

Finally, the BlackBerry Bold has a new QWERTY keyboard that RIM likened to a modernized Curve keyboard, but I'm not really seeing it. Instead it reminded me more of the BlackBerry 8830. Now, I know some of you 8800 series users had issue with the keyboard, but I tried it out and it's pretty easy to use--large-ish buttons with some spacing between the keys.

Wireless smorgasbord

There's a heaping of wireless options on the quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) BlackBerry Bold, but the most appetizing and notable item is the HSDPA/UMTS (850/1900/2100) support. It's the first such-equipped BlackBerry, and we all know it's been a long time coming. RIM says the delay for bringing such a device to the market is that it wanted to make sure battery life wouldn't be sacrificed at the expense of including the 3.5G technology. Hey, whatever the reason, we're just finally happy to have it. You also get integrated Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g), Bluetooth 2.0 with full A2DP support, and built-in GPS (enhanced and assisted).

Horsepower
The RIM BlackBerry Bold is equipped with a 624MHz Intel PXA270 processor whereas previous BlackBerrys had 312MHz processors, so technically, you should enjoy smoother and faster performance. During our briefing, there were a few hiccups in performance, but we're going to keep our fingers crossed and chalk it up to the fact that it wasn't a final unit. There's also 128MB flash memory and 1GB of onboard memory, which is all supplemented by the microSD/SDHC expansion slot (supports up to 16GB cards).

Multimedia, Web, and other good stuff
You still with me? I know this post is getting a bit lengthy, but just a few more highlights to note. First, the Bold includes an improved Web browser (thank goodness) with the option to view pages in a full desktop HTML style or a mobile version, and you can now more easily navigate pages with the trackball, which acts like a mouse cursor, and zoom in/out.

As for multimedia, the smartphone is equipped with a 2-megapixel camera with video-recording capabilities and up to 5X zoom. The media player also continues to support numerous audio and video formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC, DivX4, and WMV3 files, and the phone is equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack. By the way, the Bold has got some pretty powerful speakers--none of that weak, tinny junk.

Oh, and hey, what's this? It's makes calls and sends and receives e-mails you say? Yes, you'll still get all of the voice and messaging features of previous BlackBerrys, and the handset will also come preloaded with Dataviz's Documents to Go suite for document viewing and editing.

"When and where can I get one?"
Now, that we've totally built up the device and you're ready to run out and buy one, here's the letdown. The RIM BlackBerry Bold isn't available quite yet. It's currently going through carrier certification, and though RIM wouldn't officially name the service provider, based on the 3G bands, you can pretty much guess who it will be (hint: starts with an A and ends with a T&T). And while pricing will also depend on the carrier, RIM is guessing it will be in the $300 to $400 range and expected worldwide availability is "this summer."

OK, that's it! My fingers are tired from all the typing, so now it's your turn. Clearly, I'm pretty amped about the smartphone. Of course, the true test will come when we finally get it in for real-world testing, but from everything I've seen so far, the RIM BlackBerry Bold has huge potential. But what do you think? Hot or not? The commenting floodgates are open, so have at it.
