Mobile Phone Industry looking to beat iPhone

Now a days, Mobile phone makers seem only interested in making phones that look very much like iPhone. But there were few blockbuster products or major announcements.

Nevertheless, the Nokia booth was packed on Tuesday as Beyoncé and Madonna songs blared from overhead speakers.

Show visitors huddled around a long white table where Nokia, introduce N series mobile phones, including the N78, a multimedia phone, N78 has a 3.2-megapixel camera, but it runs on a high-speed network, includes a navigation function and eight gigabytes of memory, and has Internet radio and easy access to multimedia Web sites like YouTube and Flickr. N78 has introduced recently in Europe (for about $500) and is expected to go on sale in the United States in June.

“The handset makers are responding differently than they have before,” said Greg Ballard, chief executive of the mobile game maker Glu Mobile.

Meanwhile, at the booth for Samsung, the Instinct was being introduced. The prototype displayed was not quite ready for the show floor, although the phone, Samsung’s answer to the iPhone, is expected to be shipped in a few months.

The Instinct is a real competition for iphone, which has many features similar to the iPhone’s, like a voicemail management system, and the devices look remarkably similar. The Instinct, operating on a proprietary network developed by Samsung and Sprint, can be used to watch live TV and as a modem to connect a PC to the Internet. Industry analysts think it will sell for about $300.

LG, introduced the Vu, which has a touch screen and multimedia features very similar to the iPhone’s. The Vu will cost $300 through AT&T stores, which have an exclusive relationship with Apple to sell the iPhone. The Vu includes an optional new live television service, for $15 a month, LG said.

Geesung Choi, chief executive of Samsung’s telecommunications network business, predicted that the trend toward multifunction mobile phones is now changing. Now a costumer wants a basic mobile phone features with browsing the Web or watching television and movies.

“There is a perception that the iPhone is a phone, but it is not,” he said. “It is a multimedia player. Maybe they should rename it.”

Others saw a similar evolution of the market. “It’s not a technology market anymore,” said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division. “It’s a consumer market. Everyone’s needs are evolving. Consumers, in the end, will get what they want.”

Just a few years ago, he said, transferring a mobile phone number to AT&T from Verizon Wireless was revolutionary. In contrast, carriers today discuss how far they should open their closed networks to rivals’ products. And the mobile phones they support not only look like minicomputers, they act like them too.

Ralph de la Vega, chief executive of AT&T Mobility, said more phones in the coming months were likely to combine touch screens with a keypad or slide-out keyboard to appease customers who want the convenience of both. “The technology is available,” he said. “But it’s a trade-off.”

It is unclear, though, just how far the big carriers like AT&T and Verizon Wireless will go.

When asked about Google’s new mobile phone platform, Android, both Mr. de la Vega and Lowell C. McAdam, chief executive of Verizon Wireless, expressed interest, even optimism that it might run on their mobile phones one day. That is in stark contrast to the wireless carriers’ reaction when Android was first announced.

“We didn’t know enough about it,” Mr. McAdam said. He said he has visited Google and met with its chief executive, Eric E. Schmidt, and others involved with Android.

"'Iron Man' lead character, Tony Stark, embodies what LG is all about by pushing technology boundaries and insisting on having the most innovative and advanced gadgets, including his mobile phone."

4 Low-cost Phones from Nokia for emerging markets

Nokia this week filled in the lower end of its mobile phone portfolio with four new low cost handsets intended for users in developing countries looking for replacement units.

The handsets are very low cost -- from 50 euros ($78) to 90 euros ($141) -- and will be available by the third quarter, the world's largest mobile phone maker said Wednesday at the Growing Together conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"People in emerging markets like Africa are increasingly demanding more from their mobile phone. Their expectations and demands in terms of functionality and design are similar to people in any other part of the world. They simply have less income at their disposal," said Alex Lambeek, a Nokia VP.

First-time buyers of mobile phones have been growing for some time now in emerging markets, Nokia said. But the number of users looking to upgrade is on the rise as well. "In 2008, Nokia anticipates that for the first time, the number of replacement purchases in emerging markets will exceed those of first-time buyers," the vendor said, in a statement.

The Nokia 5000 has a 1-3 megapixel camera, an FM radio with recording capability, a high resolution QVGA display and MP3 ringtones. The 5000 supports e-mail and other essential applications as well, including Nokia Xpress Audio Messaging, Bluetooth interface, and GPRS connectivity. It will ship in the second quarter with an estimated retail price of 90 euros ($141).

The Nokia 2680 slide phone is the other low cost mobile phone and it is first slider device for entry-level markets. The 2680 slide has an FM radio with recording, a built-in camera and MP3 ringtones. It also contains all the essential mobile phone features, like an expanded directory. It will ship in the third quarter with an estimated price of 75 euros ($118).

The design of the Nokia 7070 Prism is really very attractive with its geometric patterns and external light effects. The 7070 Prism offers nice content with themes, wallpapers, and MP3 ringtones. The Nokia 7070 Prism has a voice recorder and built-in hands-free speaker and will ship in the third quarter for $50 euros ($78).

The last one is Nokia 1680 classic, which the company described as its most affordable camera phone ever. Nokia 1680 has all the basic mobile phone features with a VGA camera and one-touch video recording features. It will ship in the second quarter for 50 euros ($78).

Motorola Z9 slider phone, based on Razr platform

Motorola is now selling a new mobile phone with a sliding cover based on its popular Razr 2 mobile phone.

The Moto Z9 is Motorola's new mobile phone available to just U.S. buyers exclusively through AT&T Inc., which includes its AT&T Navigator GPS feature.

Paul Nicholson director of feature phone products group, based in Libertyville said "This will have a new keyboard and the slider features instead of the clamshell form factor of the Razr,".

Motorola, along with other industry giants, is in Las Vegas for whole week to show off new products at the CTIA Wireless trade show.

The Z9 is a new step in mobile phone direction, but Motorola needs a best variety of handsets, said Rick Franklin, telecom analyst.

"I'm not certain that this is enough of a breakthrough product to reverse the negative trends Motorola has recently experienced," Franklin said. "Additional product introductions will likely be needed to do that. Additionally, Motorola needs to improve its cost structure. Even at the height of Razr's popularity, Motorola's profitability lagged Nokia's."

The Z9 is Motorola's first 3G phone with Navigator. It has the CrystalTalk for clearer voice sound quality. Other features include AT&T Mobile Music, stereo Bluetooth wireless technology, up to 8 gigabytes of memory, with an optional removable card and a 2.0-megapixel camera.

Moto Z9 is being sold exclusively at AT&T and the price is $249.99 after a two-year service agreement.

The Moto Z9 was developed under Motorola's Mobile Devices business, which is expected to be spun off into a publicly traded company by next year.

LG debuts 3G 'Vu' handset with mobile TV

LG announced the debut of its new Vu handset at CTIA Wireless today in Las Vegas. The device is one of the first two that will support AT&T's Mobile TV service launching in July.

Equipped with a 3-inch touchscreen and "minimalist" scroll bar interface, the Vu is reportedly a not-so-distant cousin of the Korean company's KS20 Prada phone in design. The 3G Vu offers HSDPA support like its designer counterpart, which offers speeds up to 3.6Mbps in Europe, but only 1.4Mbps in the United States.

The attraction of this handset is its ability to serve as a portable "live media" device, as it supports both the MediaFLO mobile TV standard and XM streaming digital radio. Several BlackBerry Phones offered by AT&T also now support XM broadcasts, an option that commands an additional $7.99 per month.

Additional features of the LG Vu include full HTML browsing (missing from earlier versions of LG's own Web browser), Bluetooth 2.0, instant messaging, and media player capabilities.

The Vu will be available from AT&T beginning in May, although the carrier has yet to announce pricing details. Based on LG's Prada phone, however, the Vu won't come cheap and will likely be priced higher than Apple's iPhone due to its 3G and mobile TV features.

Motorola unit on Videocon radar

Videocon hires top global banker to convey interest in handset biz.

The Videocon group has expressed interest in buying telecom giant Motorola’s struggling mobile handset business, which is being split into a separate company.

“We have hired one of the world’s top three investment bankers who will convey our interest to buy out the mobile handset business of the US company,” Group Chairman Venugopal Dhoot told Business Standard.

Explaining why he was bidding for Motorola’s handset business, Dhoot said his group was ready launch its pan-Indian GSM mobile operations at an investment of Rs 6,000 crore.

Also, it has a consumer durables retail chain under the brand name “Next” with over 1,000 stores across the country that stock mobile phones too.

“The Indian market for mobile phones is around 120 million units a year and we have our own retail chain stories that we can leverage. Also, we can transfer the manufacturing plant to India to leverage cheap labour in the country,” added Dhoot.

Windows Mobile 6.1

Windows Mobile 6.1, the latest upgrade to Microsoft's main operating system for handhelds, has a few important invisible patches and a bunch of minor interface tweaks. It leaves all of Windows Mobile 6's core strengths and weaknesses intact. On the positive side, Windows Mobile is still a flexible OS with unparalleled Windows and Exchange support, and the greatest number of handset choices by far. No matter which carrier, manufacturer, or form factor you choose, you'll find a Windows Mobile device to suit your taste.

No mobile OS integrates more tightly with Windows PCs, Windows Media Player, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Exchange. Syncing ability with Windows Mobile is built into every copy of Windows on the desktop, every copy of Windows Media Player, every Exchange server later than version 2003, and every WMA-format-compatible music store. That makes Windows Mobile an unusually easy solution for connecting your Microsoft universe.

On the negative side, Windows Mobile has a fussy interface with a lot of tiny, confusing elements, and it often feels slow. That hasn't changed with 6.1. And with Apple, BlackBerry, and Google's Android all moving in on Microsoft's turf with faster or more usable systems, Windows Mobile needs a much more extensive interface overhaul to keep its lead into the future.

We tested Windows Mobile 6.1 on a Samsung BlackJack II, one of the two launch devices for the new OS. The BlackJack II runs the Standard, or non-touch-screen version of Windows Mobile. It has slightly different features than the Professional, or touch-screen version, which we weren't able to test--and which will launch on the AT&T Tilt.

Nokia N96 will be possibly getting xenon flash: True or False

According to Phones Review who got there information from another source they are saying that the super smartphone Nokia N96 will possibly getting xenon flash, maybe this is true but then again maybe it is false, we will have to wait and see.

Obviously this is not official but we are going on what we have heard, a Nokia Rep apparently has said “the delays are due to them adding (at the last minute) a Xenon flash, ala N82! Finally, an all in one phone with almost nothing (bar BlackBerry) missing, from what I can tell of the marketing stuff he left for the N82, Xenon flashes seem to be Nokia’s next big push from now on, which is fine by me.”

So when you think about it that the Nokia N82 has it, you must wonder that surely the Nokia N96 should have xenon flash.

Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

Consumers today want everything. They want everything, all the features they like, into one device. Well, if you love music, the Nokia has got the piece for you. The Nokia 5310 combines the best of both worlds - a portable music player with a wireless communications device.

The 5310 is a smooth and sleek phone. Every time you see it, you get to imagine a cool new sports car that you want to show off to all of your friends. With its 9.9mm thickness, the 5310 is perfect for listening to your favorite tunes while jogging around the block or commuting to work or school via a bus, taxi, or subway train.

Other features you will notice is its build quality. The Nokia 5310 is solidly built. While sleek, the aluminum sides and color arrangement causes the phone to appear elegant, yet modest. Nokia’s placing of the 3.5 mm headphone jack at the mobile phone’s top, was an outstanding design choice. This conveniently prevents the cables from becoming knotted up. Also, the music control keys rise up perfectly off the phone’s surface, making them easy to locate when the phone is concealed in a purse or pants pocket.

The Nokia 5310 features a 240 X 302 pixels display, with 16 million colors. With this, users will definitely enjoy text messaging, pictures messaging and pictures that are displayed crisply and brilliantly.

Of course, as this is a music phone, the 5310 sounds as good as it looks. It has an audio messaging feature that allows users to record personal voice message and then transmit it to compatible gadgets. However, the main audio feature of this model is the Music Player that accommodates your favorite formats, including MP3, Midi, ACC, eAAC and WMA. Boasting of 18 hours of playback time, the Nokia 5310 can provide you with listening pleasure for a long time.

And, if you prefer a more spontaneous music selection, you can use the Nokia 5310’s FM radio. Lastly, if ringtones are your forte, this phone will be sweet music to your ears, providing True Tones and MP3 file formats.

The Nokia 5310 does not merely look and sound good. It compensates for its tiny 103 mm x 44 mm size, with several fantastic features. The tri-band EGSM 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz networks let you be truly global in a globalized world. Meanwhile, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0 connectivity will give you some options when downloading your beloved songs and ringtones.

The pictures that the phone’s 2 mega pixel camera with 4x digital zoom produces are inferior to those of digital cameras. Nonetheless, remember that it is impractical to haul a digital camera with you everywhere. On the other hand, the Nokia 5310 mobile phone epitomizes convenience, allowing you to catch any shot, and at any time.

Nokia’s Xpress Music mobile phone series seems to have it all, combining an excellent blend of quality form and functions. The Nokia 5310 mobile phone continues this tradition. Combining a sleek appearance and packed with wonderful features, it certainly provides its user with much value.

In-flight cell phone use may soon be available

Travellers who want to make a phone call, while flying the skies of Europe will soon be able to use their mobile on commercial flights across the continent.

Ofcom, the UK regulator has finally given its approval for the use of mobile phones on aircraft registered in the UK, while flying in European airspace.

There are other problems that will need to be resolved before a totally universal system is in place. The Civil Aviation Authority, CAA, has stated that aircraft would need to have operating procedures in place to ensure that their planes systems would not be disrupted.

The current intention is to install tiny base stations, known as pico cells on aircraft, which can be switched on after takeoff, to create a cell phone coverage area within the plane. This will give passengers access to phone calls, text, and the internet.

Back in 2003 the CAA stated that mobile phone signals caused serious interruption to navigation equipment on commercial aircraft. This caused navigation equipment to give out false information, it is not yet certain that pico systems may not have the same effect.
