The Sony Ericsson W1i Concept Phone

This is a concept phone and it'll never be on sale, but I though that it was a well-done concept in terms of aesthetics, done by ToShaRa from se-nse.net. If I saw one of these in public, it would definitely catch my eye.

The W1i from Sony Ericsson, complete with Walkman branding, sports specifications that are a little...incongruous, not to mention far-fetched. Running on Windows Mobile Professional, it's got 120GB of memory, an Intel 2.0GHz CPU, Carl Zeiss optics used on the camera (of which there are two), three 6 watt speakers, plus the usual support for microSD, GPS, and WiFi. Oh, and the screen is SXGA resolution (yeah, that's 2048x1024), which of course Windows Mobile doesn't support.

It's packing a 15,000mAh battery which allows you to use the phone for 30 minutes of talk and 3 hours of standby. To keep size and weight down on the phone, the user must carry around a 3.5lb power pack that provides the juice for the W1i.

Yeah, that last part I made up, but would probably be true if a device with these sort of specifications ever came to fruition somehow.

New rumoured Walkman smartphone the W1 coming from Sony Ericsson?

Have a real good close look at this image, see what you think, does it appear similar to something you’re seen before? Could we be looking at a possible Apple iPhone competitor? Does it give you a hint of maybe the Samsung Instinct or even the Samsung Omnia?

Mobilewhack located this image of the W1 which is possible a future Walkman series mobile phone coming out of Sony Ericsson.

There have been many mid range Walkman mobile phones, all for those users that want good music and smartphone features in their grasp within one unit, and the Sony Ericsson W1 would be the ideal choice to make. That’s when and if it actually hits the streets.

The Sony Ericsson W1 does look good on paper with stats like Windows mobile 6.1, VGA display, 6.1 megapixel camera with WVGA recording, 32GB internal memory, WiFi b/g, and TV out.

Nothing else on the Sony Ericsson W1 at present but you know we’ll keep you posted.

Sneak-Peek: Nokia S60 Touch UI

Rumors about the forthcoming Nokia touch screen enabled device aka Nokia Tube hasn’t garnered much steam as of late, but Symbian Freak has got some leaked screen shots of what could be its touch UI to whet your appetite.

Well, as you can see, there’s isn’t much to go on here; and to be quite honest, compared to the iPhone and Blackberry, there’s still something lacking in the S60 interface in terms of wow factor. It still looks like any typical (read: boring) S60 UI with the exception of the 3 main buttons located at the top which Nokia fan boys are quite familiar with considering its extensive use in the present line of mobile phones.

So just take this sneak peek with a grain of salt as nothing is definitely certain yet, and if you’re Nokia, here’s my little advice for you: it wouldn’t hurt to add a little pizzazz to the UI’s graphics. God knows how many gadget freaks love those eye-candy icons and wallpaper.

LG KF300 Wine hits Japan and Europe

LG has announced the launch of its KF300 Wine phone in Japan and Europe. Unveiled in March of this year, the LG KF300 is part of the electronics maker's fashion phone series.

Specs wise, the Wine phone is a tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGGE clamshell, featuring two displays (main 2.2-inch QVGA, and external 1.3-inch 128×160 pixels), 2 megapixel camera with auto-focus, Bluetooth connectivity support, 10 MB of internal memory, media player, FM radio, and microSD memory expansion slot. We're not aware about the pricing at this stage, nor which European markets it will hit. I would guess the price will start from free with a contract on many of the Europe's mobile operators.

UK mobile network 3 confirms to T3 the Nokia N96 will launch in September

On Monday, T3 got an opportunity to view the Nokia N96 in the wild, which is expected to arrive in September and will be available on the Mix & Match contracts for around £15 per month, with 3 mobile.

The Nokia N96 is one of the most closely watched new releases from the Finnish phone maker as it will be competing closely with Apple's high-profile device. While the N96 has avoided playing copycat with a touch-screen interface, it does pack more than enough tech power to keep pace. Connectivity includes HSDPA and Wi-Fi, and it has 16GB of integrated memory, completely wiping the floor with its 8 gig predecessor, although Nokia later upgraded the N95 to a 16GB option as well.

Where it really beats the iPhone though is the camera - the N96 sports 5-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera with dual LED flash and with instant upload tools for Flickr, Vox, Yahoo! and Google.

Best of all though, it doesn't look dull as dishwater, like so many of Nokia past and present phones. Gone are the N95's crude angular edges, to be replaced by smooth line and gorgeous curves. No matter whether you love or hate Apple, we have to thank it for putting a rocket up the collective arse of mobile designers.

Expect the video preview T3 shot to be uploaded shortly.

BlackBerry is UK's top web mobile

The BlackBerry 8310 is the UK's most popular mobile phone for accessing the internet using the Opera Mini browser, according to a new survey.

Of the top five phones that are the most popular for internet browsing, BlackBerry, manufactured by RIM, occupies three of the top five places according to Opera's State of the Mobile Web survey.

Opera said Sony Ericsson's K800i is the second most popular mobile for accessing the web using Opera Mini. It is followed by the BlackBerry 8100, the BlackBerry 8800 and the Nokia 6300.

"The BlackBerry devices have large screens, perfect for surfing the web, and they also come with good data plans, which is why they're popular in the UK," said Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive of Opera.

However, the 10-country survey revealed a much different picture globally. Nokia's N70 mobile phone was found to be the most popular for internet browsing.

Google has regained top spot as mobile surfers' favourite website, after falling behind to Yahoo last month.

Opera Mini is a Java-based browser that will work on more than 800 different mobile phone handsets, according to the company. It has around 14.5 million users globally.

Apple's iPhone was missing from the list as it uses the Safari browser and no third-party browsers are available to iPhone customers.

Three New Walkman Phones Announced by Sony Ericsson

It's a little hard to believe, but the Walkman line of mobile phones from Sony Ericsson has been around for three whole years already. To celebrate this triumphant milestone, Sony Ericsson has officially announced no fewer than three new Walkman phones.

Starting from the left, we have the Sony Ericsson W302. The musical candybar comes equipped with FM radio and a 2 megapixel camera. Given the model number, we can probably expect a rather affordable price point. In the center is the Sony Ericsson W902. This candybar is a decided step up from the W302, tossing in a 5 megapixel camera and super high sound quality for all the audiophiles in the audience. Last but not least, we have the Sony Ericsson W595 slider with built-in stereo speakers.

All three phones have shake controls and quad-band GSM. Look for them to hit retailers before the end of the year.

T-Mobile Pushes The Envelope In U.K.

T-Mobile's U.K. ad may be testing the bounds of good taste. In "More minutes for £30," a veterinarian wearing a long yellow glove apparently puts his arm up a cow's rear end, searching for a better deal than most mobile companies offer.

The campaign created by ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi, per guardian.co.uk, takes a different approach than the TV ad running in the U.S, though both focus on consumers finding more minutes to talk to their hearts' content.

In the U.S., T-Mobile focuses on home service. Speaking to consumers with home phone lines, the "Say Good-bye to Good-bye" campaign message tells consumers T-Mobile gives them so many minutes, they never need to say "good-bye."

Research reveals that most people typically have longer conversations on a landline, compared with a cell phone. Rather than pay $40 for a monthly landline, T-Mobile customers get unlimited nationwide calling for a fraction of the cost, per the company.

"Sometimes you have to say good-bye because you're worried about running up a large bill because of the time you're spending on the phone," says Bob Moore, chief creative officer of Publicis in the West, which runs the T-Mobile account and oversees the creative directors and products in the States. "Since there is no longer a need to say 'good-bye,' in the ad where people would normally say 'good-bye,' they say 'hello'."

The campaign is running on network, cable and TV, as well as in newspapers and on various Web sites, including the dedicated T-Mobile @Home microsite, www.t-mobileathome.com.

T-Mobile appears to reach out to consumers, communicating a similar message in completely different ways. Amy Shea, EVP at marketing research firm Brand Keys, believes most U.S. consumers would accept the UK ad, the critical point being that cows are not pets. "For most of us, they are food, and we won't respond the same to a bovine with a sardonic look as we do to Fluffy or Rex in any sort of distress," she says. "There also is a rather large contingent that likes humor. This certainly fits, or should I say the glove fits."

Though not convinced the ad will bring success for the brand, Shea wonders whether people remember the compelling message about saving money on minutes from T-Mobile or just the cow. She says humor works for the breakthrough--research repeatedly demonstrates--although it is not always great at driving sales.

Mobile phones: Spanish troubles drag down Vodafone

Vodafone became the latest victim of the slowdown yesterday as the mobile group warned that its annual revenues would be at the bottom end of forecasts.

The revision - mainly caused by falling sales in Spain - shocked the City and sent shares down almost 14% to close at 129p, making it the biggest percentage faller in the FTSE 100. It cast a shadow over the departure of chief executive Arun Sarin, who is stepping down next week after five years at the helm.

Ericsson also suffered from a Vodafone effect, with shares down 11% despite reporting better than expected quarterly earnings figures.

Although Vodafone said results were in line with expectations, and reiterated guidance on operating profit and cash flow, it said full-year revenues were likely to be at the lower end of its previously stated range of £39.8bn to £40.7bn.

The company said trouble at its Spanish operations had dragged European organic revenues down by 0.2% year on year in the three months to the end of June. With more than 16 million customers, Spain is one of the company's four main European markets, along with the UK, Italy and Germany. Service revenues in Spain were down 2.5% in the quarter, contrasting with 8.1% growth over the course of last year.

Jonathan Groocock, an analyst at Investec, said the evidence of slowdown in Spain "shatters the widespread perception that the company is immune to an economic slowdown".

"Perhaps it was always too good to be true," said Mark James at Collins Stewart. "The Spanish and UK telecoms markets, resilient to the economic slowdown to date, finally look to have cracked."

Sarin said Vodafone had suffered from a "relatively severe macroeconomic environment". "We are not immune to it but we are much more resilient than most other companies. If anyone thought we were immune, that would have been a mis-thinking about how we operate."

He said one problem in Spain was that migrant workers who had been working in construction were returning home.

"Migrants and small-to-medium-size companies have taken a lot of share. But here comes the downturn - there's less construction work and some migrants have gone home. But it's not a business that's falling apart, it's a segment within that business."

He said in the UK - where service revenues for the quarter were up 2.1% thanks to data and messaging, but revenues from phone calls fell by 4.4% - the main difficulty was competition from other mobile networks.

Sarin said earnings would be protected by the company's cost-reduction plans and the strength of the euro against the pound could, on current trends, benefit the company by as much as £750m over the six months to the end of September.

Revenues for eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific were up 9.2% on an organic basis in the quarter. Overall Vodafone added 8.5 million subscribers in the quarter, taking the company's customer base to around 269 million. Group revenues rose 19% to £9.8bn in the quarter, with overall organic growth of 1.7%.

Latest Mobile Phones: Style and Performance Guide the World of Communications

Almost every one of us makes use of the latest mobile phones to stay high on communications for different reasons. While some of us make use of them for staying in touch with our relatives, family members and friends many others use them for communicating with business clients and colleagues.

Some few decades ago, a mobile phone was an unimaginable dream but this dream of past has now been turned into a reality with the sustaining innovations in the world of communications. The traditional landline phones are things of the past and with more and more communication technology users now opting for the mobile phones, the time is not far when each one of us will have a mobile phone in our hands.

The present day market is flooded with cheap mobile phones and it becomes a difficult task for a customer to make a final choice among the latest mobile phones. A prospective customer looking for a user-friendly, affordable, feature-rich and power-packed mobile phone must consider important factors such as navigation ease, price, brand name, market visibility, features, memory capacity, compatibility with media formats, camera, sound and audio solutions besides price and substitute products.

If a prospective mobile user is engaged in other functions such as multimedia applications, Internet and gaming then he must opt for a mobile phone supporting these functionalities. On the other hand, a basic mobile can easily purchase a mobile phone with some appreciable mobile features such as handsfree and speaker.

If you want to experience the ultimate magic of advanced and highly refined audio and video solutions besides comforting conversations and advanced mobile features then the Sony Ericsson J120i, Sony Ericsson K220i, Sony Ericsson K320i and Sony Ericsson W660i are some of the best options. Nokia 6650: Clamshells can be smart, too

Just because a phone is smart doesn't mean it needs to look like something built for a Robot Wars competition. Smart phones, perk up! You're allowed to look normal. Case in point is Nokia's 6650, a seemingly humble phone that hides almost as many features as the infamous Nokia N95.

This metal-clad clamshell runs on S60, so there are plenty of options for installing new apps such as Google Maps Mobile to use with the 6650's built-in GPS. If you want to browse the Web, HSDPA offers fast broadband speeds. Unfortunately, there's no Wi-Fi.

If you can't be bothered flipping open this clamshell phone to access certain features, you'll be pleased to know that on the front of the 6650 is a small screen. You can use it to play music without needing to exert any of extreme effort that goes into unfolding the handset.

Also known as 6650 fold, it doesn't feel flimsy. It's not too heavy and the keypad, although flat, is easy to use. Our only disappointments with the 6650 are its 2-megapixel camera, which could produce better quality shots, and the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack that forces us to put away our own headphones for ones with a 2.5mm socket.

Nokia finally prepared to take touchscreen mainstream

Nokia promises portfolio of touch-screen devices to cover all sections of the market. Image: Nokia Corp.

With the recent subsidised re-emergence of Apple’s iPhone leading the iconic and trendy smartphone into the realms of widespread mainstream popularity, Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia Corp. looks set to relent on holding back touchscreen technology as something limited to being an upper-tier handset attribute.
More pointedly, Espoo-based Nokia, the world’s leading manufacturer of mobile phones, relayed to the press late last week that it intends to grace its sprawling customer base with a “complete portfolio” of touch-sensitive devices, which will include product lines directed specifically at the lower end of the market.

Nokia claims that it “remains fully committed to bringing to market a complete portfolio of touch products,” which it says will be directed towards prospective buyers positioned across the “mass-market, the high-end, and even at the low-end” of the company’s demographic appeal.

In terms of Nokia’s initial offering as it looks to drive the market accessibility of its touchscreen devices, the mobile phone maker has yet to issue concrete details, choosing instead to comment that:

“…our first touch device will be aimed solidly at the ‘mid-range’ or ‘volume’ part of the market. This device will be competitively spec-ed -- especially considering the price point.”

Nokia expects to be in a position to officially announce its first mainstream touchscreen phone in the next few months.

While currently remaining well within the realms of industry speculation, initial rumblings following Nokia’s outline suggest that the company’s first handset out-of-the-mainstream-gate will be the 5800 Tube.

Looking not unlike a certain trend-defining phone created by Cupertino-based Apple Inc., and already tentatively referred to as something of an “iPhone killer,” the 5800 Tube is expected to hit the market by the close of summer 2008.

Specifications for the 5800 Tube include a 3.2-inch touch-screen display (16:9 widescreen ration and 16 million colours), a 3.2 mega-pixel camera (with auto-focus), quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio, 3G UMTS/HSDPA, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, TV-out, 140MB of onboard storage, and the S60 operating system.

LG still out-touching the iPhone

The touchscreen market has been a long time coming, it's fair to say. Since the first time a touchscreen was shown in 1971, its use in small devices, where screen space is at a premium, has been inevitable.

The problem with touchscreen technology was it was TOO futuristic; the sort of thing that could revolutionise so many things, and the little problem of the necessary development was all too negligible in the public's collective eyes.

So the question of 'when will we see touchscreen phones' should really have read: 'when will the tipping point come between cost, battery life and performance so it makes sense to use it in a phone?'

It's a less interesting and more wordy question, but still valid.

Long time coming

And the answer to that can be found in the iPhone. There's no doubting Apple was working with touch interfaces since the early 90s, and the concept of the iPhone was dreamt up not long after the first iPod at the turn of this century.

But making a touchscreen is one thing; to get it right is quite another. And there's no denying the iPhone's interface is pure perfection at the moment: smooth, responsive and above all, accurate; the touchscreen the mass market has been clamouring after for decades.

But how did Apple manage to come in and steal the thunder from a saturated mobile market? Why didn't another manufacturer, one with years of handset building experience, knock out the touchscreen device to beat all others?

Well, the answer to THAT lies with LG. Despite being fairly new to the handset arena itself, it can be seen as a pioneer in the touchscreen market. It has over 45 patents in this area, and has released and sold more touchscreen phones than any other company.

That's right: LG has sold more touchscreen phones than Apple in not much more time.

iPhone vs the Viewty
We were having a discussion in the offices of TechRadar recently, debating the performance of the iPhone vs. that of the Viewty, LG's top touchscreen seller.

I was arguing the case for the Viewty, my trusted device for almost a year, while one of my colleagues was making the case for his new iPhone.

The discussion boiled down to a simple question: 'Why did LG miss a trick with the Viewty? It could have made an awesome touchscreen on a pretty well-stocked handset, but didn't.'

(A question and a statement, granted, but still, you get the gist.)

His argument was simple (and valid): The iPhone is as close to device perfection as anyone has seen for years.

And it's true, the iPhone is great. The touchscreen is swishy and swoopy (if you've ever played with one, you'll know what I mean). The screen is large and bright, and the 'keys' are accurate when pressed.

The LG Viewty's screen is like that of the iPhone, only a step or two behind on every point. You have to 'throw' screens to scroll them, you have an ever-so-slight lag when each key is pressed (the Viewty also packs haptic feedback, but that matches the press in the lag stakes too), and the screen is a little smaller.

Basically, good but not as good. Had the iPhone never appeared it would probably be the best in class.

Apple: zero to hero

But this isn't a debate about whether the iPhone is better than the Viewty: it's about how Apple got the touchscreen so right.

However, the fact the iPhone has such a good interface actually isn't cutting it on a global scale. LG recently showed it has sold over seven million touchscreen handsets, and will continue as market leader for some time yet.

The reason for this is also the reason Apple has done so well with the iPhone, which has only sold around five million units in both the first version and the new 3G iteration.

Apple only has one device. You either want an iPhone or you don't. But LG has worked out lots of ways to enter the touchscreen into the psyche of the masses worldwide, and it's paying off.

The Viewty, Voyager and Venus have all been big sellers, but mix things up nicely for the consumer. For instance, the first is all touch and no keys, while the latter teams the touchscreen with a full set of buttons too.

Future
"We were a true pioneer in touchscreen phones, applying for a total of 49 patents while developing the Prada Phone by LG," said Dr. Skott Ahn, President & CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

"From the beginning we have worked to create phones that are extremely easy to use despite their myriad features. This is why our touchscreen phones have been so well received around the world.

"As the market for touchscreen phones continues to grow we will also continue our research in this area to create even more innovative products."

Marketing spin aside, the point is LG has been the one hard at work on the interface, and is primed to deliver it to the markets in the ways it wants. Apple's iPhone might be universally popular, but LG has models for the US market, Europe, Asia and Africa.

Its diverse touch options are the reason it has sold so many handsets, and given the global touchscreen handset market will reach 125 million units by 2010 (according to Strategy Analytics), it is well-primed to still be jostling at the front come that date.

Of course, Apple will probably have outsold it by then. Nokia will have joined the touchscreen market in a big way, and Samsung and Sony Ericsson will likely have a few decent offerings too.

But the public mustn't forget one crucial thing: touchscreens are still a LONG way from perfect. They eat battery, they can be 10 times more responsive and accurate, and above all, they aren't always needed.

So hats off to both LG and Apple, for they have proven what is needed to bring this technology to the market, and have both sacrificed a lot to do so.

Nokia N81 8GB Review

Orange, T-Mobile and 3 turned down Nokia’s flagship music phone because it offers the manufacturer’s Music Store. However, the panel doesn’t think the networks are missing out on anything too special with the N81 8GB, particularly given the obvious comparisons with the similarly sized N95.

As can be expected by a phone of its considerable size, the N81 boasts a comprehensive range of features, including 3G, Edge and Wi-Fi capabilities, an MP3 player, FM radio, Push-To-Talk and up to four hours of talktime.

While it does not compete with the N95 on the camera front, the N81 has received positive reviews on its music and gaming offering. However, the N95 is more of an all-rounder, and the panel sees little compelling reason to opt for the N81 instead of the N95, and has mixed opinions on the device.

Kane was one of the more enthused. He says: ‘There are a lot of good things about the N81 – the screen, menu system, music player and gaming. It seems to be reliable with a good size and weight.’

The Carphone salesman is also impressed, saying: ‘I’m a Nokia fan, and I think the N81 is a really good phone. The gaming is excellent and so is the sound quality of the music player. The fact that it has Edge, 3G and Wi-Fi is extremely impressive, especially compared with the iPhone, which doesn’t even have 3G.’

The Carphone salesman adds that the camera could have been better, but says the quality of other features makes up for this.

However, the O2 salesman disagrees. He’s unwilling to look beyond the basic camera and is unimpressed with the design. ‘I think it’s a pretty poor handset.

It’s lacking in a lot of areas. The camera is sub-standard and has a very basic flash. It is also quite chunky and feels cheap.’ Kotecha also thinks the camera ‘could have been better’.

The panel agrees that the N81 targets a young demographic. The O2 salesman says: ‘I would say it’s aimed at the 18-24 year-old market, with the music and gaming as its main selling points.’

Wide appeal

The Carphone salesman says: ‘It will attract both music and gaming fans – basically a young crowd - although its appeal could stretch beyond that. The MP3 sound quality is actually better than the Sony Walkman phones.’

Kane also thinks the N81 will attract younger users, but feels the poor camera might disappoint. ‘It’s attractive to the younger market because of the music and gaming, and the stylish design. The camera could be more competitive when you consider the phone is aimed at a young market, many of whom want a good camera. That’s the one thing that lets it down.’
Overall, the panel could not reach a unanimous verdict over the N81. Kotecha says: ‘Seeing as the price is the same as the N95, people will probably go for the N95.’ The O2 salesperson describes it as ‘a brilliant multimedia device, but could have been better overall. The Carphone salesman calls it ‘a gamer’s dream’, while Kane says the N81 is a ‘typically stylish Nokia’.
