LG KF700 mobile phone review

Following the trend of pairing touchscreen functionality in a slider model, the KF700 takes a step further than the KF600 by making all of the top section into one touchable element. But does this step bring anything to your mobile experience? We find out.

The front of the phone is filled with a 3in, 262kpixel, screen which provides all the touchscreen functions – there are no touch sections, or divides like in the KF600. Again, you get the feeling that LG could have done more to get closer to the edge and avoid the 5mm border at the sides that is effectively wasted screen space.

Slide it up and you reveal the standard keypad including the green and red call buttons, and the all important “C”, which in LG phones is used to delete characters in text messages and numbers and so on. In terms of build quality, the keypad feels slightly cheap, but otherwise, the slide and other hard buttons have a good positive feel to them.

Despite the touchscreen functionality, there are still a number of hard buttons scattered over the outside, and the control dial that we will come back to later. Down the right side you have a dedicated camera button and a lock button, that you’ll need more often than you’d think.

That control dial is a central feature to the KF700 and works in cahoots with the "OK" button that sits beneath it. Hit the OK and a customisable dial menu opens, providing shortcuts to, well, whatever you like. The obvious options are the music player, album, FM radio and so on that you’d want to get to easily.

Select a shortcut and a press of the OK button will take you to that application. In the music player and normal voice calls the dial also acts as a volume control, which is pretty useful.

However, that dial can also be used to scroll up and down menus when they appear on-screen, but it is not accurate enough to always get the option you want. Also, because the wheel isn’t clickable, you can highlight the option you want, and then you have to press the option on-screen (the OK button would launch the shortcuts again). Like other models, the wheel is in the wrong place, meaning you have to shift your grip to use the dial and then again to select what you want, so it is a system that becomes limited in use for the shortcuts and nothing else.

The main problem here is that the touchscreen functionality means the loss of a d-pad. Unless the touch control is well-refined, it becomes a pig to use, and unfortunately, the KF700 falls smack into that category, oink, oink.

The touch interface boasts haptics, i.e, you get feedback through your fingertips, however, this isn’t always totally accurate, and you’ll find you get a buzz when you haven’t applied sufficient pressure to select the option you want, which is frustrating. We also found that during calls, the pressure of your ear could unlock the screen, meaning that you can cancel a call. Similarly in calls to the voicemail, we’d find that our ear presses would open up a menu, so when you try to delete the voicemail with a number key press, you'll find your actually editing your address book. Not good eh?

Using a hash of buttons, dials, on-screen icons, navigation of the phone is not intuitive: icons come and go as you move around menus, sometimes you have a top shortcut bar, sometimes a side shortcut bar. It just doesn’t seem to work very well, with one exception.

On the rear you’ll find the defacto 3-megapixel camera, that can be accessed via the dedicated button, that you also use to take a picture. Here the full screen comes into its own allowing for good steady alignment of photos without having to squint at a tiny image. It is a shame, in this regard, that the pixelage hasn’t been boosted to 5 with a more comprehensive lens arrangement.

As the KF700 supports HSDPA, there is also a front-mounted camera for all those video calls you are sure to be making.

As far as texting goes, things are a standard LG affair, pretty good, except for some confusion that arises with T9 word selection, again faced with a dropdown menu you have to select the word you want, and it is too easy to hit the wrong one and ditto with exclamation marks and the like. The Send and Back options are adjacent so you'll be saving to draft and then resending on a regular basis.

There is however, an external microSD slot, which is great for storage for your music and images, and using the shortcut dial, the music player is actually pretty good. Unfortunately there is no 3.5mm jack so you have to use the LG supplied version.

The key lock is also something of an issue for us. Not only can you turn off the in-call lock with your ear, the lock button becomes essential all the time. You can elect to have the slider lock off the touch capabilities when it is down, but it doesn't always do it! In some menus, the screen will still be active. The lock only seems to work when you are back on the homepage, and closing the slider doesn't revert to the homepage so key locking is something of an enigma.

Nokia Unveil One Of The Slimmest Smartphones Around

Nokia, or the cheeky people who leak photos, have been teasing us with snippets of information on the new E71 for a while now and it surely cannot be long before Nokia throw in the towel and give the thing a release date. It’s so close, we can feel it in our palm, so to whet your appetite further, here are the current specs as we know them:
Key features of the Nokia E71

• Full QWERTY keyboard below a 320×240 resolution display.
• A 3.2 megapixel camera.
• Just 10mm thick and weighing 120 grams.
• Assisted GPS built-in.
• Wi-Fi and 3G HSDPA connections give flexibility for fast data transfer.

The Nokia E61 never really challenged for the throne in full QWERTY-keypad-smartphone-land, but the E71 that replaces it looks set to change that with a fantastic design and a thickness of just 10mm – a real rarity in these circles. It looks usable too, with sensibly sized keys and a large, central navigation d-pad to control things. The d-pad surround lights up as an event alert too!

The E71 is a Symbian powered smartphone, so any amount of downloadable goodies are available to users, as is the inclusion of a PDF reader and document viewer to cement the handsets clear business intentions. Of course, POP3 and IMAP email are supported, along with Nokia’s For Mail Exchange and the Blackberry system too if you should want it. Away from the business side, there’s the camera and a music player to keep you occupied. All the early reports on the E71 are favourable, making it look like Nokia have a serious business-phone contender on their hands.

Google previews Android phone

Google has unveiled a number of new features of the Android mobile phone at a developer conference.

At the demonstration in California it was revealed that owners will be able to unlock the device by drawing a secret shape on the screen.

Along with the 'signature unlocking' the phone boasts several more predictable feature including an internet browser, map software, compass, multimedia applications, text messaging, calendar functions and email - as well as a phone.

The phone, tipped to rival Apple's iPhone, is based on Android, a mobile phone operating system launched by Google last November.

The operating system is backed by an alliance of more than 30 mobile phone operators, handset makers, software firms and component manufacturers. HTC, Samsung, Motorola have said they will produce handsets that will run on the Android OS.

Android is an open-source operating system, and while Google will be supplying many applications, developers will be encouraged to create their own.

Google has declined to give a definite release date, but Android project leader Andy Rubin says they're committed to meeting a deadline in the second half of 2008.

Strategy Analytics, a research firm, has estimated that Android will be installed on two per cent of smartphones by December. This, however, is likely to only be the beginning of a period when all phones begin to resemble computers much more closely; Android is Google's bid to establish a potentially lucrative dominance in the mobile OS market that could be comparable to Microsoft's dominance in the PC market.

It is estimated the mobile advertising market could be worth more than £5.5 billion by 2011.

Sony Ericsson Z770 Ducati phone

Who doesn't love the Italian gusto that goes in to every Ducati motorcycle's design? Ducati exudes a sense of passion and style that bikers the world over envy. There's only the small issue of the higher price point that keeps a Ducati out of practical reach for many.

While a Ducati is pretty much the cheapest way to lay claim to an Italian-made motor vehicle, it's not cheap by any means. But, that doesn't mean that the average Joe-bike-rider can't get their hands on some official Ducati-designed gear on the (relatively) cheap.

The Sony Ericsson Z770 Ducati edition brings the style and feel of Ducati's motoring tradition in a more affordable handset. All gussied up in a Ducati-designed red and black paint-job, this Sony Ericsson Z770 flip-phone sports Ducati-branding. The handset comes with an HBH DS-220 based Ducati Bluetooth headset to match the trick color-scheme of the SE Z770.

Unfortunately for Ducati-fans in The States, the Sony Ericsson Z770 only supports tri-band (900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM. But, if tri-band works well in your corner of the world, the SE Z770 should serve up data through its web browser at UMTS/HSDPA speeds.

Sony Ericsson plans to bring the SE Z770's Italian gusto to TIM in June.

Mobile history in the making for Vodafone with LG

For the first time in Vodafone history Vodafone shops across the UK will have an LG mobile phone on their shelves this weekend.

As from this weekend the new LG KF750 “Secret” mobile phone is to be available on all networks in the UK with the exception of 3. This will be the first time an LG mobile phone has been paired with Vodafone since a deal between Vodafone and 3 was brokered some five years ago when Vodafone agreed not to source LG mobile phones in exchange for 3 not sourcing Samsung mobile phones.

Samsung’s new flagship mobile phone the Samsung Soul will be the first Samsung mobile made available to 3. Both carriers welcome this shitch which should open up new customers for both companies.

Vodafone’s first LG KF750 is a slim stylish slider with a 5 megapixel camera, no standard D-pad but instead has a central confirm key, with 2G network GSM 900/1800/1900, 3G network HSPDA, 2.4 inch touch-screen, GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, FM radio with RDS, standby time up to 260 hours and talk time up to 4 hours, and measures 102.8 x 50.8 x 11.8mm with a weight of 116 grams.

So there you have it Vodafone history in the making, and it seems 3 history in the making too with their gaining the Samsung Soul. And really this is the way it should be in fairness of competition, no mobile phone should be exclusive to one carrier as this will lead to maintained high prices.
