Nokia N96 to hit the UK in October
Nokia has set 1 October as the UK release date for the successor to its hugely popular N95 mobile phone.
The slimmer N96 will have a slightly larger 2.8in QVGA screen, along with GPS and a 5-megapixel camera.
The N96 also doubles the storage of the N95 to 16GB, and has space for a memory stick to increase the storage even more.
Nokia confirmed that the handset will also have an integrated DVB-H receiver, and a small pull-out stand allowing owners to watch Freeview TV channels on the go.
The new multimedia device will be sold via mobile operators 3, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
O2's conspicuous absence from the list has led some to suggest that Apple may be putting pressure on the operator to avoid direct competition with the iPhone 3G.
The Nokia N96 is expected to cost around £400 on its own and should be free on some contracts.

Sneak Peek at Sony Ericsson G705 Slider Phone
Although the language pack currently being displayed on the leaked unit is clearly not English, these pictures do provide an excellent look at a yet unannounced phone by Sony Ericsson. A slick sliding phone with likely multimedia-minded features, the Sony Ericsson G705 seems to boast an interesting two tone design.
The top half is a piano black, highlighted by some shiny silver bits for face buttons. Open the phone, however, and you discover a matte white (almost eggshell) finish with the numeric keypad. In terms of features, people are saying it runs on the A2 platform and gets a 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, media player, and Memory Stick Micro expansion. There's also mention of WLAN.

UK leads European mobile music market
Europe’s mobile music scene is more advanced than that in the US, according to new findings from eMarketer.
While the UK is the biggest individual mobile music market in the EU-5, the other countries—France, Germany, Italy and Spain—are reporting sharp growth as well. eMarketer predicts that mobile music retail revenues in the EU-5 will reach over $1.4 billion by 2012, up from $267 million in 2007.
eMarketer expects ad-supported mobile music in the EU-5 to reach $170 million in 2012, up from $4.6 million in 2007.
The US is the world’s largest retail market for music. However, it lags behind parts of Europe for mobile infrastructure, a justification for the UK’s more advanced mobile music market.
The joint venture service from Sky and Universal Music to enable consumers to stream music on-demand or download onto MP3-playing devices, including mobile phones and iPods, shows that companies are looking to meet consumer demand for online and mobile music in the UK.
eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report, ‘Mobile Music: Ads to the Rescue,’ John du Pre Gauntt, said, “Given consumers’ reluctance to pay for music on their phones, marketers are finding new opportunities to partner directly with carriers, labels and even music artists themselves.
“Direct deals between brands and bands are no longer anomalies, but are part of a growing trend by both parties to bypass intermediaries and go directly to customers.”
He added, “Mobile works better as a marketing and customer relationship platform than it does as a retail sales platform.
“Bands and artists are increasingly using mobile to form direct relationships with their fans, which are then monetized through other means, such as tickets to live shows, merchandise and fan clubs.”
Marketers will account for a greater proportion of that overall spending as the ad-supported model for mobile music gathers steam.

Orange to carry iPhone 3G this Christmas?
The internet is once again abuzz with rumours that the iPhone 3G may be made available on the Orange network here in the UK before Christmas, as early as October, if the stories are true.
It has long been suggested that O2’s exclusive network deal with Apple was only a temporary one, as we’ve seen Jobs and Co. dabble in network polygamy elsewhere in the world, such as Australia, where the handset is available on three different networks.
The net reached boiling point when a story published on The Register last week cited the blog of one Ernest Doku who claimed that a “very, very credible source on the inside” revealed that the iPhone 3G would arrive on Orange by October.
The post, (found here) says that “in light of recent events” (i.e. the O2 network repeatedly crashing under the groan of demand) the prospect of the iPhone 3G arriving on Orange is “more likely than not.” The post also points to the fact that sales of the initial iPhone were sluggish, although fault cannot be entirely attributed to O2 on that front.
Of course, its all hearsay without Orange, Apple or O2 officially confirming anything, but the prospect of an iPhone 3G available on another network this autumn has galvanised interest on the blogs, with people already speculating about the inevitable price war and how it would pave the way for iPhone availability on other networks.
