Truphone's VoIP app dials up iPhone

Getting poor Skype sound and want to cut down on international call costs? Truphone's new iPhone app might be worth checking out.The London-based mobile VoIP operator has offered the service since 2006 for the E or N series Nokia phones. An iPhone version of Truphone's service hit Apple's App store Friday.

The VoIP service lets people send text messages or make calls to anywhere in the world for a low fee.

Calling a landline costs 6 cents per minute, and dialing a mobile phone costs 30 cents per minute. SMS text messaging costs 20 cents. Calling another Truphone user is free in certain countries, including the United States, U.K., China, Australia and large parts of Europe. But you need to be in a Wi-Fi spot.

Calls can be made entirely over Wi-Fi and the Internet, bypassing the traditional GSM network operators. Not everyone has loved that.

In April 2007, Vodafone and Orange blocked Truphone's VoIP capability on its branded Nokia N95 handsets. In June 2007, T-Mobile in the U.K. followed suit, blocking calls from its customers to Truphone's mobile numbers. But only a month later, a U.K. court forced T-mobile to stop their blockade.

On the Nokia phones, Truphone usage isn't limited to Wi-Fi spots, but can also work over 3G. So far, this isn't possible with the iPhone.

Sony Ericsson may buy Spice Mobile

The world’s third-largest handset manufacturer Sony Ericsson is in talks to acquire BK Modi’s Spice Mobile. Spice Mobile is the handset company of the Modi group and sells mobile phones under the Spice brand. Sources close to the development confirmed that the Modi group had demanded Rs 80-100 per share, which values Spice Mobile at around Rs 700 crore.

BK Modi directly owns about 64% in Spice Mobile. However, it is not clear if Sony Ericsson will accept this price. Spice Mobile shares closed at Rs 22.7 on BSE on Thursday, which gives the company a market capitalisation of around Rs 177 crore. In the last 40 days, Spice Mobile shares have lost one-third of the value, from a high of Rs 35.9 on May 29.

A top source in the Spice group confirmed the development and said that while talks were on, the deal had not been finalised. The source also added that initially, Spice Mobile had approached Sony Ericsson for a ‘wide-ranging collaboration and partnership’, but as the talks progressed, it was felt that an acquisition would suit both companies better. “If Sony Ericsson were to acquire more than 50% in Spice Mobile, it will have to make an open offer as per our regulations. They want to acquire a majority stake, but it has not yet been finalised if it will be a 100% buyout,” the source added.

If the deal goes through, this will mark yet another exit of the BK Modi group from the telecom sector. Just last month, BK Modi had divested his 40% stake in mobile service provider Spice Communications for Rs 2,700 crore. The BK Modi group also owns Cellebrum, a VAS company, and Hot Spot, a handset retail chain.

Sony Ericsson is currently the third-largest player in the Indian handset market after Nokia and Samsung. Market watchers also pointed out that it was only recently that Samsung had taken over the No 2 slot from Sony Ericsson in India. While Spice Mobile is a recent entrant in the Indian handset market, the company has been able to make impressive gains as it offers some of the cheapest handset models in the country.

Spice Mobile sources said that the company was registering sales of close to 200,000 handsets a month. Unofficial industry figures peg Sony Ericsson’s monthly sales at over 400,000 units and Samsung at about 4,50,000 handsets. A Sony Ericsson-Spice Mobile combine will be the second-largest handset player in the country.

Spice Mobile is setting up a manufacturing facility in Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. Currently, the company procures all its handsets from contract manufacturers in China and Taiwan. A Spice Mobile executive said the company had a large team that designed handset models and customised as per the needs of Indian customers, which are then manufactured abroad. Spice Mobile was recently in the news when Mr Modi launched what it termed as the ‘People’s Phone’, a low-cost handset, for Rs 599.

Motorola Rokr E8 – Review

Although the walkman handset of Sony Ericsson might be something as the household name but when it comes to music phones they usually lack the essential and standard headphone socket or even the support for most of the music formats. Therefore it would not be very difficult for any other company to take the lead. The Rokr E8 from Motorola is inclined simply and purely as music phone and the phone for those style conscious people. The cell phone is available free of cost just for a monthly contract with Orange and O2.

Design

When switched off you will feel that the Rokr E8 is simply a black large slab. The cell phone is designed wit the haptic keypad which is press sensitive but it does not mean that they are on the screen. It imitates the physical keypad perfectly and makes speed typing pretty easy. You would be surprised to see the 3.5mm headphone socket which means that any regular headphones that you have would work just fine. There is however no major changes as the MicroSD slot is just besides the SIM slot in the handset which is excellent for aesthetics but those who keep swapping cards will be disappointed.

The 2 megapixel camera can be found at the back of the handset which however does not include a flash. HTC have finally announced the long awaited HTC Touch Diamond cell phone. The fact is that the HTC Company has gone nearly fourth time to become a main competitor of iPhone. The Apple iPhone 3G: The Second Coming

The temptation, when sitting down to write this review, was simply to dust off the piece I wrote to mark the launch of the first iPhone last November.

That's because in many ways the new 3G device is a case of same old, same old: same disappointing two-megapixel camera; same size, more or less, albeit with a new glossy black back; same lack of support for Flash-based online videos, used all across the web. And like its predecessor, the touchscreen iPhone 3G - which combines a mobile phone with an iPod music player and a mobile web browser - remains supremely easy to use.

But to simply rehash that old article would be to do the iPhone 3G a great disservice: because, yes, while cosmetically and in broad hardware terms it differs little from its predecessor, the new handset boasts more than 100 new features and countless more uses.

The launch of the iPhone 3G - so called because it finally allows users to surf the internet at fast speeds using the 3G mobile phone network, rather than relying on the excruciatingly slow Edge network used by its predecessor - also marks the launch of iPhone 2.0. This is a complete overhaul of the software that powers the device. But it's not exclusive to the iPhone 3G - it will be available for free to all existing owners of the first-generation iPhone, and to owners of the iPod touch for a small, as yet unknown, fee.

It is this software change that will finally see the iPhone shake off its "luxury gadget" reputation and instead become a mainstream device.

Central to this ambition is the launch of the Application Store, an online marketplace accessed via iTunes that allows iPhone users to download extra software for their handset. You might, for instance, be addicted to eBay; download and install the eBay application, and you will have live auction information on your screen. People who enjoying playing computer games on the move will love the iPhone - you move the phone itself to control the on-screen action.

Make no mistake - this is a software revolution for mobile phones. While phone owners have long been able to add extra software to their handsets, it's hard to find anyone who went to the considerable time and effort of doing so. The iPhone, by contrast, is an exercise in simplicity; people will use the Application Store. Its potential is limited only by the imagination of the developers busily creating new programs for the iPhone.

This "blank canvas" is bolstered by the inclusion of global-positioning technology in the iPhone 3G, similar to the kind used by satellite navigation systems. Not only does it mean we'll start to see location-specific software cropping up - delivering, for example, reviews of restaurants in your vicinity - but it may also spell the end of the traditional map. There's no need to take an A-Z with you when the iPhone provides such an easy-to-use way of plotting your location on Google Maps, and of guiding you to your destination.

Push email, another new feature of the iPhone 2.0 software, means that work and personal emails are delivered straight to the phone as soon as they drop into your computer's inbox. It's incredibly straightforward to set up, and should appeal to the "BlackBerry crowd" of business users who want their email on the go.

Of course, the iPhone has its downsides. The camera - at just two megapixels, exactly the same as the original iPhone - is awful when you consider that most decent phones have four- or five-megapixel cameras as standard. It remains a mystery as to why Apple did not improve the quality of the camera between models.

Battery life, too, may be a little patchy for some people's liking. Many of the iPhone's best features - like 3G web browsing, or watching videos - are a power drain, so don't stray too far from a plug point. There's still no video-recording camcorder feature either. Heavy iPhone owners will be disappointed that there isn't a way to copy and paste text between programs. And there's still no picture-messaging either - a standard feature on European phones for years, but unpopular in Apple's US home market.

Nevertheless, this is the iPhone British consumers have been holding out for. Elegant, easy to use and powerful, the iPhone, perhaps more so than any other mobile device on the market, is what you choose to make it. That's an incredibly attractive proposition for today's fickle public, especially when combined with a substantial price drop on the cost of the device. Whereas the first iPhone cost £269, plus a minimum monthly contract of £35, the new iPhone 3G is free on some contracts and as little as £99 on others, with tariffs starting at £30 per month.

If you're an existing iPhone owner thinking about upgrading, perhaps hold off for at least a week while you give the free iPhone 2.0 software update a try, as you may decide it is sufficient for your needs. But for new customers? Well, at this price - and with this potential - the iPhone 3G is hard to resist.

Motorola MING A1600 and A810

Motorola MING A1600 The Motorola MING A1600 may look familiar to regular readers, because it is almost identical in every way to the A1800 that we covered last month except for one important detail.

This touchscreen phone has a 2.4" QVGA display, a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and A-GPS which enables turn-by-turn navigation. The A1600 also features a talking dictionary, panoramic photo stitching, microSD expandable memory and Bluetooth. The hallmark transparent screen cover is still present as on previous MOTOMING devices.

There's no 3G support on the A1600, and it doesn't have WiFi either. But then this phone is designed for China where 3G coverage is poor, although WiFi does seem to be something that would be useful.

As we said, the A1600 is very similar to the A1800 except that the A1800 also supports CDMA where the A1600 does not.

The Motorola MING A1600 should support English as well as Chinese, so you can expect to see a small number coming into Europe and the US as special imports.

Motorola A810
We have covered the A810 twice before (here and here) and really all that was missing from Motorola was a few final details.

Although this isn't a MOTOMING device, the A810 shares a similar touchscreen to the A1600 and A1800, although this time it is a little smaller at 2.2". There's a basic 2 megapixel camera, microSD memory, Bluetooth and an FM radio. The A810 lacks GPS, 3G or WiFi but one positive thing is that it is much more compact than the A1600 and A1800 and it weighs just 100 grams.

As with the A1600, this is really aimed at mainland China. But as it is also a standard quad-band GSM phone that supports English as well as Chinese, there may be a certain amount of interest from other markets.

The A810, A1600 and A1800 have some clever technologies built into them, and partly as a result of the MOTOMING range, Motorola is still quite successful in China even though sales have slumped in the rest of the world. As they stand, the lack of 3G and WiFi in these devices would be offputting to many European and American customers, but Motorola simply doesn't seem to be targeting those markets at the moment. Perhaps this also explains why the new MOTOZINE ZN5 doesn't support 3G either.. and why China is getting it first.

Motorola say that both handsets should be available now in the Chinese market.

Sony Ericsson W760i Walkman

Ever since we first set eyes on Sony Ericsson's W760i Walkman phone, we knew we'd love it. It enters the music phone market and goes up against one of our all-time favourite music handsets, the W890i. As this slider phone faces some tough competition--even from its own siblings--is it everything we hoped for?

Design
This stylish handset immediately feels good to use, with a solid, lightweight build and in our opinion, an attractive design for business or personal use. Sliding out the keypad reveals a smashing set of large, flat keys, which are soft to push and easy for speedy texting.

A Memory Stick Micro slot sits on top of the phone for easy memory card swapage. It's also possible to unlock and navigate the Walkman features of the W760i without sliding out the keypad, using a dedicated Walkman button. This is extremely useful for when you're listening to music.

What isn't useful is the lack of a 3.5mm headphone socket, immediately nulifying any chance of us recommending this handset as a suitable replacement to a dedicated MP3 player. You'll need to use the bundled plastic proprietary adapter in order to use your own headphones, resulting in roughly 3 metres of cable between your ears and the phone. But that's our only massive criticism of the W760i's design.

Features
This quad-band music phone has some distinctly non-music phone features. Firstly, an accelerometer detects the phone's position in space. It knows when it's being tilted and in what direction. For instance, if you tilt the phone on its side when viewing a photo, the photo will rotate to better fit the screen.

This also allows you to control games by tilting the phone. EA's Need For Speed Pro Street 3D racing game comes pre-installed among others. Its cars can be steered and accelerated by tilting the handset in a variety of directions.

Sony Ericsson also crammed in GPS navigation, coupled with Google Maps and Wayfinder Navigator for helping you get around in unfamiliar locations. A 3-megapixel camera will let you take photos and videos of these locations and email them over the W760i's high-speed HSDPA data connection.

Download the amazing--and free--Opera Mini browser and the W760i becomes a blisteringly fast Internet browsing device, too. Sony Ericsson has bundled an integrated RSS feed reader into the slick dedicated media menus, so even if you're not bothered about browsing the Web, you can at least keep up to date with news as its published.

DRM'd WMA content purchased from most online music download stores should be supported--we had no problem playing some protected Dream Theater tracks purchased from Napster. Sadly not supported are AIFF, OGG, FLAC and lossless WMA music formats. There's no gapless playback either, so live albums will have a second-long pause between tracks.

This is pretty typical for music phones and the supported formats--unprotected MP3, WMA, AAC and WAV--are at least the ones most commonly used in the music world. Additionally, A2DP stereo Bluetooth enables the W760i to work with any Bluetooth headphones you've got lying around.

Performance
We've enjoyed using this phone so much. Its menus are slick and attractive and the physical controls are well placed. It's not flawless, but we're confident most people will agree it's a nice handset to use.

Music can be dragged and dropped through Windows or synced with either Windows Media Player or Sony Ericsson's bundled software. We had trouble getting video on here, though, and we wouldn't recommend the W760i if watching video is a major desire. File transfers are also extremely slow--around eight to ten seconds per 320Kbps MP3.

Testing with uncompressed, lossless WAV files, we heard a decent sound quality, though through our reference-grade headphones we could hear a tiny element of background distortion. Most people won't even notice this and it won't be an issue for casual listening. A keen ear with a good pair of earphones may spot it.

Call quality is great and you should get a brilliant 9 hours of calls or 400 hours of standby time. Pictures quality is okay too, though at full resolution there's a good deal of noise.

If there was one more thing we'd like, it'd be Wi-Fi. No, a music phone doesn't necessarily need it, but considering the inclusion of so many other features that aren't synonymous with music phones, Wi-Fi is notably absent from the W760i.

Conclusion
The W760i is probably our favourite Sony Ericsson Walkman phone to date and with its terrific design encasing a feature-packed and high-performing handset, it rivals even Nokia's N95. Even if you're not bothered about Walkman features, you'd be daft not to consider it for its other selling points.

T-Mobile launches Nokia 6550

Following the announcement of the launch of the Nokia 6650 at CeBIT back in March, the handset is now on sale in the UK and is available exclusively through T-Mobile.

The 6650 is "optimised" for use with T-Mobile services, and is exclusive to the operator. In the UK it is available on all T-Mobile pay monthly tariffs, both Flext and Combi.

On the Combi tariff the handset comes with unlimited text, internet use and 700 minutes for 18 months. Handset price has not yet been confirmed, but at launch it was said to be as low as one euro, so we expect a "from free" price tag.

The phone offers integrated GPS and multimedia player, and "easy access" to T-Mobile services such as Web'n'walk, MyFaves, Mobile Jukebox and NaviGate.

In addition, the stainless-steel clad clamshell offers HSDPA data connectivity, a 2.2-inch TFT QVGA colour display, dedicated music keys, built-in AGPS, a 2-megapixel camera with flash, 30MB of internal memory, a microSD card slot, FM radio and Bluetooth.

Nokia 6220 Classic

Classic is in, and Nokia has been cashing in on this trend for the past few months, unveiling a series of devices tagged with its first generation model numbers, and adding the Classic moniker to it. But there's nothing classic about these devices as they all have undergone vast improvement in their features and functionalities, as we have already seen with earlier models such as the Nokia 6120 Classic and Nokia 6500 Classic. So let's cut to the chase and talk about the next device with the Classic tag, the 6220 Classic.

A Familiar Sight

There are no surprises with the 6220 Classic when it comes to the form factor, which is the all too familiar candy bar design. Exploring further, there's a few changes to the shortcuts on its side profile, like the inclusion of a dedicated button at the top left that links you to the preloaded Nokia Maps 2.0. For memory expandability, you get a hot-swappable microSD slot at the bottom left, and instead of the plastic cover that's held by a flimsy connector, the 6220 Classic uses a plastic hinge which was definitely to our liking. The Volume and Camera buttons are at their standard position on the right, and below, we have the microUSB connector and unfortunately, a 2.5mm AV connector.

Unlike the Nokia N78 that got us riled up over its thin and painful numeric keystrips, the 6220 Classic retains the classic (pun fully intended) 12-key numeric keypad. However, with a lack of tactile feed from the flushed keypad, text got a bit mangled and we made quite a number of typos on the device. All is not lost though, as the five-way navigation pad, coupled with a raised Menu and Clear button, made the interface navigation easy on our fingers.

A New Interface Approach

Similar to the previously launched Nokia N78, the 6220 Classic sports the latest S60 interface, updated to the 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 which has a few tricks up its sleeve with a smoother and better looking interface design. Connectivity options are just as varied, ranging from Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, USB 2.0 and HSDPA. Unsurprisingly, Wi-Fi is not available and it's all for the better due to the lower capacity 900mAh battery that comes with the device. Without the power-draining Wi-Fi connection, the 6220 Classic managed to give us nearly one and a half days of moderate usage of its cellular functions on top of a constantly active Bluetooth connection.

With a 5-megapixel imaging sensor aided by Xenon flash, some might call the 6220 Classic a more affordable alternative to the Nokia N82. We decided to leave that thought aside for the moment, and see how the 6220 Classic fared in the imaging department. Without the aid of the Xenon flash and on macro mode, the colors did not turn out as bright as we had hoped for, but line resolutions gave us some pleasing results, with a reading of 13 and 11 on the vertical and horizontal axis respectively.

Classic Afterthoughts

While you might not get the full suite of functions that's fast becoming a much desired factor for wireless connectivity, it should not be the deciding factor for those who seek a phone that scores well on both the aesthetic and performance level. Though not as well equipped as some of its N-series cousins, the 6220 Classic does perform its job adequately, with strong imaging capabilities to keep itself ahead of the competition. And speaking of competition, we aren't sure if the S$728 price tag (without contract) will be a crowd puller, but couple it with an attractive two-year contract pricing and its 5-megapixel image quality, it should satisfy the crowd that requires more phone and imaging capabilities than wireless connectivity.
