Top Ten Mobile Phone Stories of the Week
Could this be the last week of sanity in the world of phone and tech reporting, at least for a while? With Apple remaining tight-lipped on any official 3G iPhone information ahead of next week’s Worldwide Developers Conference, discussion of the model has degraded into will it be thin or thick non-news – surely indicating that we’re set for a virtual explosion of fandom very soon. We haven’t lost our sanity here (yet), so enjoy our pick of the week’s mobile news.
1. Google, the GPhone and Android have been confusing interested parties this week, or rather the source of this article has been. It says simply that the GPhone has been delayed until 2009 – fair enough, but no one was expecting an actual GPhone, rather lots of phones running Android. So, was there a GPhone? Was it Android delayed until 2009? Who knew!
2. Then, as the confusion spread its tentacles around the Internet, everything was cleared up. Google denied any delay in its Android software and phones were still expected to be available before the end of the year, and made no noise about a GPhone at all. So, a completed circle of news and we’re all back where we started.
3. Samsung’s recently revealed L870 slider phone caused a storm when it was reported to come with a browser named Safari. This, as any techy will tell you, is the name of Apple’s web browser which also happens to do a mean job on the iPhone. Two and two were put together and everyone got hot under the collar. A shame then, when it turned out to wrong. The confusion comes from the L870’s S60 operating system also having an unrelated browser named Safari…
4. Do you know people who carry knives? Would you prefer the police to be aware of this? If you answer yes to these two questions and you go to school in Tower Hamlets, then CrimeStoppers UK has the solution. You can send an anonymous text message to alert the authorities and perhaps play an important part in removing dangerous weapons from the street. If successful, the scheme is expected to go nationwide.
5. If food we knew we had in our kitchen went missing each day for a year, we’d probably just go mad in a Twilight Zone sort of way, especially if we lived alone. However, a Japanese man in this very situation set up a camera in his home to identify the grub thief. The camera was linked to his mobile phone and when he saw movement on the screen, he called the police who arrested a homeless woman who had been living in his cupboard! Japan: Cool phone stuff, worryingly unobservant people.
6. A six month study of 100,000 people’s everyday movements, completed by using information gained via mobile phone usage and cell-towers, has revealed most people go to the same few places each day, and rarely travel outside of 10km from their homes. Thanks for that.
7. Pockets bulging with gadgets are not an attractive sight, but then neither is this solution to the problem! However, if you’re a gadget fan who has a penchant for John Bender’s style in The Breakfast Club, this could be the product you’ve been waiting your entire life for.
8. Gold phones are nothing new, but while the gaudiness seems to suit phones like the Prada and iPhone, why do it to one of the more understated phones on the market like the Nokia 6300?
9. Most interesting new phone on the block not covered in gold (thankfully) this week was the oddly named Samsung Soulb. That’s right, it’s a superscript ‘b’ and probably supposed to be pronounced separately, but that’s unlikely to stop people calling it the ‘soulb’. Anyway, it’s a great looking candybar handset with 3G, HSDPA and a 3 megapixel camera.
10. Finally, watch-phones are nothing new, but a watch-phone, image at the top of the post, which people would consider actually strapping to their wrists is! This Finnish designed WearPhone can apparently even send SMS messages, but it’s not clear how!

Microsoft to boost music in Windows Mobile phones
Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) will focus on improving music in future versions of its Windows Mobile software for mobile phones, an executive told Reuters on Friday. Software giant Microsoft's mobile communications division provides operating systems for smartphones and other mobile devices based on the Windows Mobile platform.
Its partners include South Korea's Samsung Electronics (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research), Motorola Inc (MOT.N: Quote, Profile, Research), Taiwan's High Tech Computer (HTC) (2498.TW: Quote, Profile, Research) and Asustek Computer (2357.TW: Quote, Profile, Research).
"One thing that Apple (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) has leveraged on is the music scenario, and I think that that is something the operators and ourselves are partnering on, just to make sure that consumers can use live music in the best way," said Andy Lees, senior vice president of Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business. He declined to provide any details.
Microsoft competes with Apple Inc's popular iPhone, Research in Motion's (RIM) (RIMM.O: Quote, Profile, Research)(RIM.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) Blackberry device, Palm Inc (PALM.O: Quote, Profile, Research), as well as Finland's Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research), which uses the Symbian-based operating system on its handsets.
Lees said music in cellphones was a huge business opportunity, since every year consumers bought 10 times as many music-enabled cellphones as iPods.
Windows Mobile users now listen to and manage their songs through the Windows Media Player program on their cellphones, similar to the one that runs on their computers.
In the Jan-March quarter, Microsoft shipped 4.3 million units of its Windows Mobile software, up 1.9 million units from the year-ago quarter. In comparison, Apple sold a total of 1.7 million iPhones in the same period, said research firm IDC.
IDC forecast sales of Windows Mobile smartphones to consumers will double that of the iPhone in the next four years.
Microsoft's managing director of OEM embedded devices in Asia, Eddie Wu, told Reuters the software giant expected global unit sales of its Windows Mobile software to grow at least 50 percent annually in fiscal years 2008 and 2009.
The company expects to ship 20 million units in its 2007/2008 fiscal year ending June, after selling over 11 million units in its 2006/2007 fiscal year.

LG Bets Heavily on Music Phones in China
LG Electronics is raising its bet on music phones in emerging nations, while focusing on touch-sensitive phones in developed nations.
The company said Wednesday that it is releasing two types of mid-end handsets specialized in playing music in Asian and Latin American countries such as China, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil and Chile.
As their economies grow, more consumers in those developing countries are planning to replace their low-end handsets with more advanced and expensive ones, the firm said.
``Aiming at the rapidly increasing demand in new markets, we will continue to release products that are based on our insight as to the customers' needs on design and functionality,'' Skott Ahn, executive vice president of LG mobile division, said in a press release.
LG is the world's fourth largest mobile phone seller after Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Motorola ― and is beginning to threaten Motorola's position.
According to market research firm Gartner, LG shipped 23.6 million handsets in the first quarter of the year, up from 16 million in the same period last year. Nokia, Samsung and Motorola respectively sold 115.2 million, 42.4 million and 29.9 million.
A large part of LG's sales increase came from the popularity of its touch-screen phones such as the Viewty. And it should look to other types of phones, Gartner suggested.
``LG capitalized on the attention the market has given to touch-screen devices since the launch of the Apple iPhone,'' the research firm said in its report. ``Although the LG Prada, Shine and KF600 models have proved popular, LG must remember that touch-screen phones do not appeal to everyone. The South Korean vendor needs to build a stronger smart-phone portfolio, as consumers and operators have started to place more emphasis on this market segment.''
LG has already been following this kind of advice. In a press conference held last week, chief executive Nam Yong said that he is sending staff from the firm's audio device and PC divisions to its handset division so they can help build phones with better music and computing functions.
The firm especially believes that its stylish music phones will appeal to consumers of developing countries, where the population is younger than developed countries. For example, the KM710 model has a touch-sensitive wheel for easy fast-forwarding or rewinding songs. Another model, the KM 380, is capable of 40 hours of music storage, the firm says.
``With these music phones we will continue our growth momentum in the new markets where we grew by 36 percent in the first quarter,'' the firm said in a release. The firm cited a report from market research firm Strategic Analytics, which said that some 293 million owners in the new markets will buy new phones this year.

Nokia targets youth with N78 mobile
Nokia has launched its N78 mobile phone, a multimedia device that fuses music, navigation, photography and mobility. The product is targeted at the youth and the ‘tech savvy,’ “who are always on the internet.”
With low personal computer penetration (31 million PCs) and low broadband level, the Rs 19,990 Nokia N78 phone acts as a convergence device. “We are looking at the next generation of internet that has evolved towards social networking or Web 2.0 where people can participate and share their experiences through communities such as Facebook and Flickr,” Vineet Taneja, Head of Go to Market, Nokia India Pvt Ltd.
Over a fifth of India’s 260 million-plus mobile subscribers use their mobile phones to log into their favourite websites to have access to mobility. This makes mobile phones the single largest consumer durable in the country, he told newspersons.
“We are moving towards ‘context aware internet,’ where people need to know what is available in a place they visit,” he said. For example, if a person with N78 is visiting the Spencer’s Plaza in Chennai, information on various stalls should automatically be fed into the device. This makes it easy for the user to go to the right shop, he said.
Nokia will use the internet as a key medium to market the N78 devices among the youth.
This will be in addition to the retail network, he said without disclosing any projection on the unit sales.
An interesting feature of the N78 is the ‘location tagger’ application, which automatically tags location data to the picture, allowing users to save picture by date and by geographical coordinates.
The slimmest of N-series devices with a 2.4 inch screen, the Nokia N78 comes with high speed connectivity with wireless local area network and a 3.5G High-Speed Downlink Packet Access, a 3G mobile telephony communication protocol. Enabled with global position system, the phone also has a 3.2 mega pixel camera pre-loaded with Nokia maps of eight cities with points of interest across 52 categories, including bars, cafes, restaurants and hotels.
The Indian market for GPS-enabled device is now at $22 million, with potential to reach $448 million in three to four years, a Nokia press release says.

Nokia are about to slash mobile phone prices
There are strong rumours circling in the mobile phone market place that Nokia are about to slash prices by as much as 20%, LG mobile phones and Samsung mobile phones have made staggering progress in the last 5 years in attaining top 5 positions in the league of world mobile phone manaufacturers.
Will Nokia cutting prices concern LG, Samsung and the likes of Motorola? Motorola are suffering the biggest drop in market share and they do have a sizable portfolio of product available in the pre-pay market place that accounts for a sizable %age of the volume business, LG and Samsung would appear strongest at producing quality high specification mobile phones that are invariably higher priced; in this category applications and services that are available on the mobile phone are more important than price so it would appear that Motorola would be most at risk if this rumour were to be true.
The rumour on price reductions comes along side a rumour that Nokia are about to take the fight for world dominance to LG and Samsung’s homefront and if Nokia does slash prices they will have to do so on their own range of higher priced mobile phones such as the Nokia N95 unless Nokia believes that they can flood the market in the emerging nations with their range of cheap mobile phones, that action could certainly affect the volume of sales enjoyed by LG and Samsung in their home markets and would likely force them to enter the lower priced market place. The certain good news is that the consumer as always will benefit if these mighty mobile phone manufacturers commence battle. We shall keep you informed.

Mobile phone tracking device launched in UK
A mobile phone tracking device which allows friends and family to find out where you are is being launched in Britain on Tuesday.
The technology delivers a map to the inquirer’s mobile phone, giving the location to the nearest 100 metres.
But those behind the idea insisted that such a service can only work if the person being sought gives permission to be found.
And if someone has already agreed to be tracked, they have then option to be made “invisible” for as long as they want.
Users will be able to register on the Social Network Integrated Friend Finder (SNIFF) via social networking sites Facebook, Bebo and MySpace, as well as online, and each searching text will cost 50 pence.
The service provider, American-based company Useful Networks, hopes hundreds of thousands of people will sign up.
It has been running in Scandinavia for several months and each registered person has an average of five to seven people they track.
American CEO Brian Levin said: “You are fully in control of who can track you and when, you can go invisible any time - that is paramount.
“This service is for people you have a trusted relationship with - people you give your car keys or the keys to your house.
“The most asked question on mobile phones is 'where are you?’ and there are a lot of cases where you don’t want to answer your phone because it is too loud or have the hassle of texting.
“The value is being able to answer automatically, but it is not going to replace calling or texting.”
In Sweden, where one million people use Facebook, 100,000 people have signed up to Sniff in the last six months.
With an estimated 8.5 million people using Facebook in the UK - 2.2 million in London alone - Mr Levin said he expected many more people to use the service.
“We expect there will be a good pick up, especially with the crazy Facebook usage in the UK,” he said. “I have travelled the planet and you guys are number one on Facebook, followed by Canada.”

The mobile phones have become the most sought after gadgets these days. We simply depend on these widgets for every simple purpose like communicating with people and also to enhance our style. But, with the developments in the market, we come across various models almost everyday which stimulate our temptation more and more. Moreover, to suit with the latest trends of the market we never give prominence to the budgetary constraints. To meet the never ending expectations of the people, the manufacturers and the network service operators are also offering various schemes and attractive offers. They tend to provide such offers to lure the customers and also to gain supreme position in the market. As such, the contract phones & pay as you go phones have been crafted to offer ultimate satisfaction to the users.
The contract phones & pay as you go phones come accompanied with several free offers to tempt the customers. Contract phones are one of the most popular and attractive deals which are offered to the consumers at very reasonable rates. To avail these phones the users are required to enter into certain contract deals. One can enjoy various lucrative incentives such as free text messages, reduced call rates and free talktime by subscribing to these deals. The contract period would usually vary from 12 months to 16 months. You can also avail several gift packages like downloading free information and Java games, mobile phone accessories etc. Moreover, the users can also purchase their preferred handset from any top class brands such as Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson etc. These handsets are basically very beneficial to those users who use their handsets for quite a lot of time. Nokia 7310 Supernova Preview
Details of the upcoming Nokia 7310 Supernova were recently published accidentally by Nokia and then swiftly removed. This attractive looking fashion phone forms part of a rumoured trio of handsets including the 7510 clamshell and 7610 slider phone. Perhaps a successor to the L'Amour series, the Supernova range looks to be much more conventional.
We don't know much about the other two handsets, but we do have very good details of the technical specifications of the Nokia 7310 Supernova itself.
This is a lightweight GSM only device weighing 83 grams and measuring 106.5 x 45.4 x 11.95mm. There's a 2" 240 x 320 pixel display in 16.7 million colours, and the handset runs the familiar Series 40 interface.
Internal memory is 20GB, expandable using microSD cards up to 4GB. On the back is a basic 2 megapixel camera with a video capture resolution of just 176 x 144 pixels at 15 fps. So the 7310 Supernova's camera is not great, but probably good enough for most users.
As well as having a multimedia player that supports MP3, AAC and WMA formats, the Nokia 7310 Supernova also has an FM radio, stereo Bluetooth and a 2.5mm TV/audio output connector. In addition, the 7310 has USB 2.0 connectivity. This means that the Nokia 7310 looks to be a capable music player, although it does lack dedicated media keys. The S40 operating system includes a web browser, email client and the standard Nokia PIM functions, so it will be easy to use but will lack the expandability of an S60 smartphone.
The 860mAh battery gives the 7310 up to 4 hours talktime and 12 days standby time. It uses a pretty standard AC-3X charger, and there's also a stereo wired headset in the box. We're pleased to see a full set of ports on the 7310 rather than the annoying single port on the 6500 Classic which is quite annoying.
No pricing or availability information is currently available, although we think that this will retail at around €150 / £120 / $250, about the same price as the similarly specified but heavier Nokia 6300. There are some rumours that the 7310 is already available in some Asian markets, although we cannot confirm this yet.

Sony Ericsson appears to want to be number one for mobile phone gaming
Sony Ericsson appears to want to be number one for mobile phone gaming takes up the mobile gaming gauntlet with new mobile gaming phone range.
Is Sony Ericsson aiming to become a mobile phone gaming brand? the latest deal that they have struck with Gestruetek, a Californain software company, would appear to give a positive answer to that question.
The principal behind the software is to turn the mobile phone’s camera into a motion control sensor. Sony already have a relationship with Gestruetek because their software is already in use on Sony’s Eyetoy for the Playstaion 2; it is reported that it will work both on previous Sony Ericsson models such as the Sony Ericsson W910i and all future new models. Rumours indicate that the software will be available from September 2008.
Nokia have tried for a number of years to make a success of a mobile phone as a mobile gaming device introducing the likes of the N-Gage with limited success now with Sony Ericsson using Sony’s Playstaion experience there is every chance that we will be seeing in the not to distant future a mobile phone handset that is a Playstaion and once the concept is proven there are sure to be plenty of games made available.
Apple, LG and Samsung will be watching developements closely because the design of their expensive handsets will surely be able to be adapted to incorporate a mobile games platform.

Son of iPhone: the next revolution
It seems as if it was only yesterday that Apple unveiled its revolutionary iPhone, yet the company is already gearing up for the launch of its successor.
As with the original, the new phone will boast many of the features that have helped make Apple one of the most desirable brands in the world. It will also have some new features, including 3G technology to speed up internet access, and applications that could herald a brave new world of mobile communications.
Gadget fans the world over are eagerly counting down the hours to Monday, June 9, when the new phone is expected to be unveiled by Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive.
The original iPhone, launched in the UK last November, was genuinely innovative for being able to respond to gestures and strokes via a touchscreen, while its gorgeous web browser was the digital equivalent of a glossy magazine.
Less popular were its clumsy text entry and outdated 2.5G data connection, which made for painfully slow texting, web browsing and e-mail collection. The upgrade to 3G will at least provide a much faster, smoother internet experience. The move should also mean that users are less likely to be cut off during voice calls, and may now sample the dubious delights of face-to-face video calling, thanks to a front-mounted camera. The high-speed technology will also make it easier and quicker to download music and videos from the web, or upload photos.
If you think that the speeds offered by some 3G networks are fast, an Australian mobile network is claiming that the new iPhone will be able to use the latest 3G technology (known as HSDPA) to offer internet access at twice the speed of the fastest UK home broadband services today.
With nobody beyond Apple’s walls having yet seen a 3G iPhone – the company is famously tight-lipped when it comes to new products – little else is known about the new handset.
There is industry speculation that the 3G iPhone will be priced at £200 at least – plus the cost of an annual contract. There’s also talk that Apple will use that large touchscreen for more than just stroking and poking – the company recently filed a patent for integrating solar panels into its handheld gadgets. Instead of using a separate, fold-out panel, Apple’s plan is to put solar cells behind the LCD screen, so the more you flash your iPhone around, the more power it could generate.
Another Apple patent involves using location-based information to create personalised and localised shopping pages on your iPhone. If you’re walking past a cinema, for example, you might see a trailer of the latest movie, and even be able to order popcorn for delivery right to your seat.
Experts say the one thing that is certain is that the existing iPhone handset will quickly disappear. “I don’t see much room for Apple to continue to offer the original 2.5G iPhone here, although they might move stock to other countries, such as some in eastern Europe without a 3G network,” says Ian Fogg, research director at JupiterResearch, the high-tech analysts.
In the longer term, Apple is expected to introduce a family of phones, in the same way that it shifted from selling a single, original iPod to offering a range of music and video players. Apple will also have to decide whether to keep the touch interface, which requires a large screen, or move to a more traditional design in order to reduce phone size. IPhone nano, anyone?
Although Apple impressed a lot of geeks with the iPhone, sales have hovered around a modest 20,000 units a day worldwide, and that’s a drop in the ocean compared with the 3m phones that sell every 24 hours. That doesn’t mean the world’s biggest phone makers can afford to ignore it, says Fogg. “Apple had never built a mobile phone before the iPhone, yet its designers created the best mobile media player, and the best mobile browser on the market. Apple has already caused its competitors to respond and change their strategies,” he says.
Nowhere is that more apparent than in the rash of rival 3G touchscreen handsets – dubbed “iPhonies” by industry insiders – that have appeared over the past six months. While none of these phones has approached the iPhone’s effortless ease of use, some at least threaten to steal Apple’s technical thunder, and often at a considerably lower price.
HTC’s Touch Diamond handset, for instance, not only weighs less than the iPhone but also uses blisteringly fast HSDPA technology and includes a GPS receiver for navigation. Or take Samsung’s F480 phone, which trumps the iPhone’s weedy 2Mp camera with a 5Mp snapper, complete with flash.
Apple clearly has some catching up to do. Many other manufacturers are already selling their second or third HSDPA phone, and have technology such as GPS and digital cameras working well together.
If Apple lacks the research muscle to fully develop the iPhone itself, it is gambling on a new strategy to keep its gadgets up to date by allowing other companies to develop features and applications for users to download directly to the new iPhone.
Jeremy Green, an analyst at Ovum, the telecoms research company, says: “It makes sense for Apple to do this, using the creativity of lots and lots of people to improve their products.”
But will that be enough? Green questions Apple’s decision to partner the iPhone exclusively with a single UK network operator – O2. “In the UK mobile market, the four biggest operators have roughly equal market share. If you go exclusive with one, you’re denying yourself three-quarters of the market.”
O2’s current iPhone contracts include all-you-can-surf mobile internet, and free use of around 6,000 wi-fi hotspots in the UK. It’s not clear yet whether O2 will offer the same deal on the 3G iPhone – although a wi-fi connection is almost guaranteed, as 3G signals can fade quickly inside buildings.
Abroad, Apple is already edging away from exclusive deals. It plans to ship iPhones to at least two operators in Italy, and future deals are unlikely to favour a single mobile phone network. However, Apple’s deal with O2 here still has some time to run, making it extremely unlikely that other operators will be able to sell the 3G iPhone when it launches.
Whatever Jobs reveals on June 9, though, it had better be good. The Apple brand isn’t only about style, and that global gathering of geeks is expecting a phone that’s as least as innovative as its predecessor. If it isn’t, there’s no guarantee the iPhone won’t be a single-ringtone wonder such as Apple’s ill-fated Newton handheld computer, rather than an all-conquering success like the iPod.
