Sony Ericsson’s W580i gets a new color

Sony Ericsson has decided to come out with another color for their W580i. If you are unfamiliar with the Walkman, back in January they managed to get a pink style and in March a dark green.

Sony Ericsson W580i now comes in red as well, although I wish they’d gone with a bolder red as opposed to this more orange version of red. The phone unfortunately has EDGE speeds and is being sold for $99.

Samsung Instinct hits record sales, says Sprint

According to an announcement made by Sprint today, the new Samsung Instinct has seen record sales since the its launch last Friday. This comes just two weeks before Apple's second generation 3G iPhone release takes place.

Dubbed the "iPhone killer" when it was first announced at CTIA 2008 in April, the Samsung Instinct only received heavy media attention just days before launch, when Sprint decided to cut the Instinct's price from $199 to $129, in an effort to compete with the iPhone and grab some sales.

Looks like it worked. No numbers were revealed as of yet, but Sprint is happy with the results, so it must mean they're doing good.

Sprint's Samsung Instinct comes packed with a 2.0 megapixel camera with video recording, POP3 email, Visual Voicemail, microSD card slot for up to 8GB of extra memory and a 2GB microSD card in the box, Bluetooth 2.0 and a full HTML browser. You can pick up the Instinct from Sprint fro $129 with a 2 year contract.

Sony Ericsson in fresh profit warning on European sales

Sony Ericsson warned yesterday that it would only break even in the second quarter because of disappointing European sales of its mid and high-end mobile phones.

The profit warning - its second this year - demonstrates the Japanese-Swedish joint venture's continuing problems, but also indicates how mobile phone sales are suffering from the global economic downturn.

In the first quarter it reported a 47 per cent year-on-year fall in pre-tax profits to €193m ($304m) on sales down 8 per cent to €2.7bn.

The mobile phone maker indicated at the time that its second-quarter results would also suffer, but investors were still surprised by the warning.

Ericsson's shares fell 11 per cent on the news, but recovered to close down 8 per cent at SKr60.80.

Sony Ericsson's warning has dashed any remaining hopes that global handset sales might bounce back this year.

According to research firm Gartner, global sales fell 16.4 per cent in the first quarter year-on-year, the first recorded annual fall.

Sony Ericsson said it would ship about 24m handsets in the second quarter with an average selling price of €115. In the first quarter it shipped 22.3m handsets for €121 each.

The company blamed moderating demand for mid to high-end phones and shipment delays on new models.

It said these "continued market challenges" would impact sales and profit in the second quarter, with gross margin expected to decline - year-on-year and sequentially - while it would attain break-even at the pre-tax profit level.

Sony Ericsson slipped to fifth place this year behind LG of South Korea among the world's largest handset markers as sales of its mid to high-end phones suffered more than the lower priced handsets of its competitors.

In the first quarter it had a market share of 8 per cent, down 1 percentage point.

Sony Ericsson has also been plagued by component shortages that have led to shipment delays of the new mid-priced phone models.

In Europe, the economic slowdown, together with longer mobile phone operator contracts, means consumers are replacing their handsets less frequently.

Sony Ericsson has been more affected than its rivals because the phones it produces are more expensive, leaving it exposed to a weak European market.

"It's highly exposed to western Europe, which is the hardest hit region," said Martin Nilsson, an analyst at Carnegie Investment Bank in Stockholm.

In emerging markets, where prices are falling, Sony Ericsson's sales have also suffered.

Competitors such as Nokia, the market leader, have weathered the downturn better because sales of their low-end phones are still robust.

Sony PSP Phone Coming Next Year, Sans Ericsson Branding

We've been sitting around waiting for a proper gaming phone from Sony Ericsson for quite some time now, especially since they have already concocted a wide variety of handsets that cater to music lovers, shutterbugs, and business users. As it turns out, Sony is reportedly working on a PSP phone and it should be ready by the end of 2009. The kicker is that Sony will be abandoning Ericsson on the project.

Up until now, it would have been remarkably difficult to find a Sony phone that wasn't branded as a Sony Ericsson. Even when Sony brought some of its franchises to the table -- Walkman, Bravia, Cyber-shot, etc. -- they kept Ericsson in tow. Such does not appear to be the case with the upcoming PSP phone.

Word is that Sony isn't going to make a whole new design for the PSP phone, instead converting the existing PlayStation Portable into a mobile phone. This would be "relatively easy", considering that the PSP already has Wi-Fi. Maybe they can throw in some Mylo inspiration for good measure too.

Nokia has announced it will start shipping the "long awaited" Nokia 6220 classic in the UK from today.

Also revealing the news that it has already shipped over 2 million GPS-enabled devices to date, the Finnish phone co says this proves that navigation is fast becoming an important feature for phones.

"Navigation is becoming an integral part of your mobile device. When consumers are looking to purchase a mobile device the key features they are looking for are a great camera, great music capabilities and now navigation", says Simon Ainslie, managing director Nokia UK.

"The 6220 classic includes all of these features and by selling over 2 million GPS enabled devices this is proof that navigation is becoming more accessible to everyone."

The 6220 classic comes pre-loaded with new Nokia Maps 2.0 and offers a GPS location finder and built-in compass as well as AGPS functionality that allows photos to be "geotagged".

The Nokia 6220 classic also features a 5-megapixel camera with Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss optics, high-speed HSDPA connectivity, TV-out feature, Bluetooth and a 2.2-inch display. There's also an internet browser, email, music player, FM radio with RDS and up to 8GB of memory.

Nokia gives the estimated price as £257 pre-tax and subsidies but watch this space for operator announcements.

The Samsung SCH-u430 will more than likely replace the lowly Samsung SCH-u410 handset, and offers the same tired features such as 160 x 128 primary display, and VGA 0.3 megapixel camera, but has been given a restyled casing that may, or may not get the occasional passerby, if they happen to be in a Verizon store, to glance at it.

Maybe the Samsung SCH-u430’s brand loyalty or even the trick analogue clock display may just attract someone, who knows? Relationship between Sony and Sony Ericsson frosty, claims insider

Rumours that Sony is working on a PlayStation-branded phone have resurfaced again, according to recent trade reports.

Marketing Week claims that unnamed industry insider sources in Japan and Korea report that the PlayStation phone will incorporate elements of Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) and is being readied for release by Christmas next year (2009).

Frosty relations

The same unnamed insiders told Marketing Week that Sony will never consider giving its PlayStation branding to the mobile specialist joint venture Sony Ericsson, as relations between the two companies were 'frosty' following the 'strategic error' of Sony handing over its Walkman branding to Sony Ericsson for use on mobile phones.

Sony Ericsson has recently launched its F305 gaming phone, which features a motion-control style interface.

Neither of the two companies are currently commenting on rumour or speculation surrounding the proposed PlayStation phone.

T-Mobile Officially Launches Motorola ROKR E8

One of the coolest phones from this January's Consumer Electronics Show, the Motorola ROKR E8 is a bar-style phone with a twist: The phone's keypad changes depending on whether it's in phone, music, or camera mode, displaying appropriate keys for the application in use. It's not an LCD touch screen like the iPhone's; rather, it's a less-expensive, more durable technology that lights up different layers under the phone's glass surface.

The E8 is Motorola 's most buzzed-about release in months, a flagship device that's supposed to raise the profile of the world's number-three cell phone maker. Like most recent, prominent Motorola phones, it's more about design than about features. The E8 is a 4.5-by-2.1-by-0.4-inch black slab, topped by a sharp 2-inch, 320-by-240 screen. Stand it on its end, and it may remind you of the monolith from the classic sci-fi movie "2001."

The keypad is dominated by a touch-sensitive scroll 'arc' that works like a jog dial on an old VCR—the farther you drag your finger along it, the faster you scroll. Below it, the keys use haptic force-feedback technology to convince you that you're actually pressing keys when you're just touching images on glass.

The E8 offers a strong, midrange feature set. It has 2GB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot that carries up to 8GB cards; the phone comes with a 1GB card to get you started. It syncs via a standard microUSB cable with Windows Media Player 11 on PCs, playing protected or unprotected WMA, but also AAC, AAC+, MP3, WAV, and RealAudio files. You can listen to your music through the single speaker on the back, or through wired or Bluetooth headphones. The phone also has a 2-megapixel camera, an FM radio, a Web browser, and CrystalTalk, Motorola's noise-reduction technology. The phone creates virtual surround-sound effects with most headphones, Motorola said.

However, the E8 is missing one key feature for a new, flagship phone: 3G. The E8 only supports EDGE, which transfers data at around 100-120 kbps. The 3G networks run by Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and now T-Mobile are much faster. T-Mobile doesn't have media services that take advantage of 3G, but that's not a big minus for T-Mobile subscribers right now; it may be in the future.

The ROKR E8 music phone is going on sale with T-Mobile on July 7 for $199.99 with a two-year service plan.

Samsung offers up the J800 Luxe, L700 and L870 mobile phones

While at the Singapore Telecommunications Exhibition, Samsung revealed a few new mobile phones, the Samsung J800 Luxe, the Samsung L700 and the Samsung L870 mobile phones. So to enlighten our readers further here is a rundown of those three mobile handsets specs.

First up is the Samsung J800 Luxe, the Luxe misleads a tad because there isn’t much luxurious about the Samsung J800. It is a mid-range handset with a slider form and a thickness of 15mm, and a 2.2 inch TFT display. The Samsung J800 Luxe features a 2 megapixel camera without any auto-focus unfortunately, but it does feature photo blog which allow image uploading to blogs over 3G.

The Samsung J800 Luxe also features FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth A2DP, music and video player, microSD slot, HTML browser, POP3/IMAP4 mail, RSS reader, Mobile Tracker, and tri-band HSPDA.

On to the Samsung L700, another mid-range mobile phone and is a monoblock form factor at 12.8mm thick and quad-band HSDPA. The L700 sports a 2.1 inch TFT display, 2 megapixel camera with no auto-focus. Other features offered are Samsung music and video player, FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth, and microSD.

Again as the J800 the Samsung L700 has POP3?IMAP mail, HTML browser along with an office document viewer. The Samsung L700 is to be released in pink, gold, and silver.

Moving swiftly along to the Samsung L870 which was initially introduced in May, and although has an appearance of the Soul, it doesn’t belong in the Soul line-up. The L870 runs on Symbian OS and is 13.5mm thick with 2.4 inch QVGA TFT display.

The Samsung L870 offers up a 3 megapixel camera with auto-focus, is tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDG with HSDPA support, but unfortunately no WiFi, there is an FM radio, Bluetooth, USB, 100MB internal memory, and microSD expansion slot. The Samsung L870 should be available in August in Europe.
As with all of these Samsung mobile phones pricing has yet to be announced.

DivX Certification granted to the Samsung Omnia mobile phone

Samsung and DivX have entered into a multi-year contract which will include DivX encode and decode into Samsung’s future mobile phones. And the first Windows Mobile based DviX certified mobile phone on the market will be the Samsung Omnia or Samsung SGH-i900 and the fourth Samsung mobile handset to achieve DivX Certification.

The Samsung Omnia features 8/GB16GB internal memory, 3.2 inch touch-screen display for easy enjoyable video playback, TV-out which will allow the playback of content from the Samsung Omnia direct to a TV set. In fact the Samsung Omnia is one powerful portable library that gives the user the choice of how and where they want to watch a video.

Vice President of Marketing for Samsung’s Telecommunication Business, Younghee Lee, says in a press release: “By including DivX video decoding in the Omnia, we’re giving our users the high-quality technology they would expect from a mobile phone with an advanced feature set. Samsung will continue to provide a flexible, enjoyable multimedia experience to our consumers with DivX on our mobile devices. It was of strategic importance to continue our relationship with DivX, for value added not only in the Omnia, but throughout the Samsung mobile line.”

DivX, Inc., CEO, Kevin Hell adds: “As the availability and creation of video content explodes, being able to take videos from the PC on-the-go and from the mobile to the living room is of increasing importance to consumers. Sdiamsung has recognized that DivX allows users to do more with their media, and we’re pleased that Samsung has continued to expand DivX certification to their mobile devices.”

Virgin Mobile Joins Flat Rate Phone Club With Affordable $80 Unlimited Calling Plan

Virgin Mobile is now offering an $80 a month flat-rate calling plan for unlimited voice service called "Totally Everything." The service, available July 1, will be a pre-paid plan (requiring no contracts) and is one of the lowest priced flat-rate plans offered by a growing list of wireless carriers including Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.

Virgin Mobile's "Totally Everything" flat-rate price of $80 however doesn't include everything you might want to do with your phone. For an additional $10 a month you can get unlimited text-messaging and e-mails.

No Service Contract Ball and Chain
On the positive side Virgin Mobile customers won't have to sign a service contract. That allows customers unhappy with their service to avoid early termination fees should they decide to cancel their Virgin Mobile account. Other carriers such as Sprint offer unlimited cell phone service packages but require multi-year service commitments that include hefty early termination fees should you cancel your account before the contract expires.

The move by Virgin Mobile to offer a contract-free service at a price that undercuts unlimited plans from Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint is seen as a bold attempt to hold on to and grow its customer base. Virgin Mobile has 5.1 million customers and reported a decline in new customer acquisitions in the first quarter 2008.

Nokia 6600 Slide Review

Last year’s 6500 came in two versions, the slender Classic and the chunkier Slide. Add 100 to the number and check out this year’s model – not quite size zero but the Slide has certainly been on a diet. And it’s still a contender for the catwalk – black is the new black. It’ll turn heads not only because of its compact size but also because of its eye-catching glossy steel skin. It feels good because of the metal, too, even down to the aluminium direction pad, and it’s nice to use because the slide mechanism is skilfully balanced and the compact keys are just big enough to use.

Thankfully, the look of the 6600 Slide bears no resemblance to the original Nokia 6600 – a phone that was as wide as this one is svelte, like an oval with the ends flattened and with curvy keys and a big joystick in the middle. How times change.

Squeezing a lot into a tiny space is the keynote of this phone. You need to look closely to see the front camera for voice calling, but it’s there (whether you’ll ever use it for video calls is another matter). It is also impressive that Nokia has squeezed four GSM antennae and two 3G antennae into this tiny casing, not to mention the FM radio aerial too. The 3G isn’t the whizziest HSDPA data speed but it’s not really a phone where you’ll want to be displaying detailed web pages – the 2.2-inch screen wouldn’t do it justice. There’s the Opera Mini browser so you can surf the net. Just don’t expect it to be comfortable. Even though it’s metal-clad, the phone is light at just 110g. And although there wasn’t room for GPS, Nokia’s Maps program is on board. However, this is no match for the Maps program on the iPhone, even prior to its GPS-enabled 3G version, partly because the 2.2-inch screen is not big enough for easy map reading. You could connect a GPS device by Bluetooth – Nokia makes one that will do the job – but this seems like a faff.

The phone’s screen is bright and colourful, not least because it’s a 16-million colour display and has decent resolution for its size – 240x320 pixels.

Funky features include a gentle way to reject a call. Tap the screen twice and the incoming ringtone is muted – handy if the phone rings in a meeting but you don’t want to red-button the caller. Instead, they’ll simply think you’re not near the phone as it continues ringing at their end. Some phones, like Nokia’s 8800 Sapphire and the HTC Touch Diamond, offer the same function but is achieved by turning the phone face down, which is more poetic.

Similarly, if you tap the phone’s screen twice in standby, the phone tells you the time and buzzes twice. It’s a tiny detail but typical of what makes the phone enjoyable to use. The same tapping quells an alarm and these effects are achieved using an accelerometer, just like on the Sony Ericsson K850i where the phone knows which way up it is.

The front of the 6600 when the slide is closed is pleasingly spare. Beneath the screen is a direction pad and two rocker buttons – the top half acts as a soft key for the function described on the screen above, and the bottom half starts or ends a call.

The central, square direction pad is black with a neat turquoise edging. It uses a simple array of shortcuts – down for contacts, left for messaging, right for calendar and up for camera. Like many direction pads that also have a central push-in button, it’s sometimes easy to mis-press it, which is annoying.

The camera is a decent 3.2-megapixel resolution, with features like sepia and negative effects, and it can also shoot video. What’s more, although there’s only a regular LED flash (i.e no Xenon), the camera has auto-focus – a real step up from the fixed-focus of many phone snappers.

Our handset came with a whopping six games on board, including Snake 3 and Sudoku. Rally 3D was a basic racer where the main fun seemed to stem from the haptic response that told you when you careered off the road.

Nokia’s chargers have changed little over the past few years, and when the current thinner one replaced the larger round charger, Nokia thoughtfully included a connector to bridge the gap. However, the 6600 Slide uses the charger found on relatively few of its handsets. It’s almost a mini-USB connector, but not quite. This is disappointing as not only do older chargers not work, a regular USB cable doesn’t fit either.

The menus are the standard Series 40 icons – nothing surprising here apart from the Maps icon that is not common, but as usual with Nokia non-smartphones, it’s speedily responsive. The contacts list doesn’t spring into life as quickly as on some Nokias but it still beats most other brands out there. Handy if you’re in a desperate hurry to phone a friend.

The 6600 Slide includes Nokia’s Music Player, although you’ll need a memory card to use it as the internal memory is tiny at just 18MB.

Music is important on a phone like this, and it’s definitely a device to be seen with, whether you’re listening to your tracks or not. Still, it’s much more capable than it seems at first glance, and won’t be restricted just to those looking for a decent evening-out phone. And if size matters to you, it’s a real winner.

LG KF510 Review

Look and feel
With its metallic body, the KF510 has a real solid feel to it, but it remains lean and slender. The scratch-proof glass adds to its sophistication, and the handset is available in a host of appealing colour schemes.

Ease of use
The touch-sensitive keys remained responsive, and the haptic feedback is a welcome addition. Yet if you're not a fan of touch-screens you can always resort back to the more standard numeric keypad.

Features
Along with the slimline metallic design and touch-sensitive navigation keys, the KF510 also sports a three-megapixel camera complete with auto-focus, built-in music player and expandable memory.

Performance
While the camera is capable of some decent snaps, the KF510's recording abilities is disappointing, with a slightly juddery QVGA resolution at only 15fps. The music player excelled when played through a pair of Sennheisers, and though the embedded Document Viewer application is a nice addition, it proved a tad difficult to read Word and Excel files.

Motorola Sheds Light on MOTOZINE ZN5

Today, Motorola officially unveiled the MOTOZINE ZN5. The ZN5 is a bar-style phone similar in shape and appearance to the ROKR E8. The phone's stand-out feature is its Kodak-branded 5 megapixel camera. The camera has autofocus, and can focus on images in less than a second, allowing you to take your picture quicker. It has a full flash, as well as Kodak-approved optics. It carries Kodak's Easy Share software, and the user interface for the camera was jointly developed with Motorola and Kodak to ease operation. The software supports a lot of editing features, panorama shooting mode, and easy sharing with social networking sites. All functions related to the camera are color-coded purple, and the keypad morphs when in camera mode to show camera-specific buttons. The ZN5 carries quad-band GSM/EDGE radios, as well as stereo Bluetooth, FM radio and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. The phone has a slot for a microSD card (supporting cards up to 4GB), 3.5mm headset jack (supporting TV out), a full HTML browser and runs the MOTOMAGX platform. It will be launched in China first, and will be available in the U.S. by the end of 2008. Motorola did not announce its carrier partner for the phone yet.

Sony Ericsson brings motion sensing games to the mobile

Sony Ericsson has unveiled a new games oriented mobile phone, which comes complete with Wii-like motion sensing capabilities.

The Sony Ericsson F305 includes motion sensor technology to detect movements which are then incorporated into game actions, like bowling a ball. The handset also includes dedicated gaming buttons and stereo speakers to enhance games playing.

Husni Al Assi, general manager of Sony Ericsson MENA commented: "Gaming is no longer something you do on your own. It's about having fun with your friends and interacting with the game. We have used motion sensor technology before in our phones and integrating it into gameplay is a natural progression."

The slider form factor handset has a 176x220 pixel TFT screen, 2 megapixel camera and quad band connectivity, with support for the memory stick micro format.

Sony Ericsson also plans to release a key-ring sized battery pack, which will add to the phone's normal eight hours of talk or playing time. The phone is due for release in Q3 of this year.

LG KC550 (LG Orsay)

The LG KC550 (also known as the LG Orsay) is probably the best camera phone that you have never heard of.

While most manufacturers still make a song and dance about 5 megapixel camera phones, LG have been very low key with their launch of the KC550, which has sneaked into the shops without much fuss.

Essentially, the LG KC550 can be thought of as a cut down version of the Viewty, retaining almost all of the Viewty's camera features but scaling back elsewhere.

Before we look at the camera in more detail, we will quickly look at the rest of the KC550's specifications. This is a GSM only phone with a 2.4" 240 x 320 pixel display, an FM radio, microSD expandable memory and a built-in accelerometer. There's a TV output too, so video clips and stills photos can be displayed on a television set.

The accelerometer can be used to flip the screen orientation from portrait (tall) to landscape (wide) modes as you rotate the handset, and it can also be used for games.. although we think that this is of limited use. Unlike the Viewty, the LG KC550 has a standard display and lacks a touchscreen.

Of course, the really interesting part of the KC550 is the camera. This is a 5 megapixel unit with a "Schneider-Kreuznach certified lens". We're not sure what certified means in this context, but having the name plastered over the back of the phone should guarantee the quality of the KC550's optics. The camera has autofocus and what appears to be an LED flash. The maximum video capture resolution is 720 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second, so it's certainly one of the best phones on the market for video recording.

There's a protective cover on the back of the phone to hide the lens when not in use, and the camera also has an image stabiliser and low-light capabilities.

Obviously it would be nice to have a touchscreen, and the lack of 3G is a little surprising, but then the KC550 is going to be cheaper than the Viewty and it is ideal for people who want high-quality pictures but are happy with a fairly standard GSM phone.

The LG KC550 is available right now from several different vendors in Europe.
