Motorola Rokr E8 – Review

Although the walkman handset of Sony Ericsson might be something as the household name but when it comes to music phones they usually lack the essential and standard headphone socket or even the support for most of the music formats. T-Mobile launches Nokia 6550

Following the announcement of the launch of the Nokia 6650 at CeBIT back in March, the handset is now on sale in the UK and is available exclusively through T-Mobile.

The 6650 is "optimised" for use with T-Mobile services, and is exclusive to the operator. In the UK it is available on all T-Mobile pay monthly tariffs, both Flext and Combi.

On the Combi tariff the handset comes with unlimited text, internet use and 700 minutes for 18 months. Handset price has not yet been confirmed, but at launch it was said to be as low as one euro, so we expect a "from free" price tag.

The phone offers integrated GPS and multimedia player, and "easy access" to T-Mobile services such as Web'n'walk, MyFaves, Mobile Jukebox and NaviGate.

T-Mobile launches deal match offer

T-Mobile has launched a new price-match guarantee on £30 Combi and Solo contracts.

The deal-match, the first of its kind, promises to match the value offered by any other network on £30 monthly deals.

It is available to existing T-Mobile customers on rolling 12 or 18-month contracts. Customers can flag up better deals from rival networks at any time during the course of their contracts and have the value matched by the network.

T-Mobile head of post pay Steve Mitchell said: "Customers are disappointed by deal changes and are often reluctant to sign a contract until something better comes along.

"We've erased those fears by giving them the assurance they will always have the best deal on £30 per month.

"We have demonstrated our intent to keep our existing and new customers happy, which is a great platform to grow on."

The network has also added an extra 100 minutes to original Combi and Solo tariffs.

T-Mobile will launch a new SIM-only 30-day rolling contract called U-Fix Lite, which is expected to launch mid-July.

As with the 12 month version of U-Fix, customers will have their spend capped. Top-ups are available to customers who have reached their bundled allowance.

Windows Mobile 6.1 phone has GPS

Mio has added to its range of GPS-equipped mobile phones with a device running the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system. The Leap G50 has quad-band GSM connectivity, a 2.8-inch touchscreen display, two megapixel camera with LED flash and geotagging, and Bluetooth 2.0, Mio says.

Featuring a black body ringed by a shiny bezel, the Leap G50 sports styling somewhat reminiscent of Apple's first-generation iPhone. However, its 2.8-inch touchscreen display occupies proportionately less of the front than the iPhone's, delivering QVGA (320 x 240) resolution.

Photographs of the Leap G50 (above) also suggest that Mio has added software to give the included Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system a facelift. Though Mio provided no further information, third-party reports claim the G50's user interface is courtesy of the same Spb Mobile Shell software that Toshiba uses on its Portege G810.

Like an overwhelming percentage of other GPS-equipped Windows Mobile devices, the Leap G50 employs SiRF's starIII GPS chipset. It runs Windows Mobile on a 400MHz Samsung S3C2443 processor, with 64MB of RAM, 2GB of flash storage, and an available microSD slot.

The G50 offers quad-band (850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz) GSM connectivity and Bluetooth 2.0, though it does not include 802.11-based wireless networking. A two-megapixel camera has autofocus and LED flash, and automatic "geotagging" of images with the latitude and longitude where they were taken is also supported.

Features and specifications listed by Mio for the Leap G50 include:

Sony Ericsson C902 Review

Sony Ericsson has thrown its own naming policy out of the window. The familiar Kseries range that for so long was associated with the manufacturer's Cyber-shot family is now the name given to its mid-tier range. Likewise the Cyber-shot clan is now known by the much more apt Cseries (presumably C for Cyber-shot, or even camera). Unveiled in February, it has taken its time, but the Sony Ericsson C902 is finally upon us; however, will a change in name signal a change in fortune?
Sony Ericsson C902 - Slim chassis

A five-megapixel Cyber-shot camera phone is nothing new from Sony Ericsson. We saw it successfully embedded in the K850i. However, while the K850i left an embarrassing bulge in your pocket, the C902 is both slim and sleek. The keys are also wide enough to allow easy access, with Sony Ericsson shying away from the smaller fiddly keys found on the K850i.

The keypad is somewhat plastic but unlike other plastic-coated shells, the device avoids feeling tacky. Once the C902 becomes active, the keypad gradually comes to life with each key illuminating - something akin of a dawning. The keypad is fairly busy, with six keys found above the numeric keys as well as a navigation pad and confirm button. Combined they take up about half of the front fascia, with the remaining half filled with a two-inch screen, which positively sparkles when brought to life, due in part to the 240x320 pixel resolution. There's no designated ‘back' button, which Sony Ericsson loyalists have become familiar with, yet the right-hand soft key dutifully plays this role. The navigation pad is neatly designed with a four-way square pad surrounding the confirm key. It feels good to the thumb with the right amount of pressure needed to give a directional push.

The back of the handset is so smooth, you'll forever be careful when placing it down in case of inadvertently scratching it. Meanwhile, the sides of the phone are made up of three silver correlated lines.

What the more intuitive of you may notice about the back of the handset is that for a five-megapixel camera, there appears to be, erm, well no camera. That is until you cleverly slide the handset about a centimetre to the left as you look at the screen.

The camera load up time is quick, but it's not instantaneous, and the sliding mechanism is smooth and feels secure. Once the camera mode is utilised the whole handset springs to life, lighting up like a Christmas tree. Most strikingly are the eight icons that magically appear around the screen (four on the top, four on the bottom) in neon blue. Each icon represents a different feature, ranging from view mode, focus, self-timer and flash. However, the real Pièce de résistance is that each of these icons can be touched to ignite that feature.

There's a very slight haptic (vibrating) response when you press one of these buttons, but it's so slight that we didn't even notice it the first few times we used it. Thankfully the process works well with each press responsive enough not to have you double tapping an icon for fear that you haven't pressed it correctly.

Sony Ericsson C902 - Camera features

Being a Cyber-shot phone, the camera was always going to be at the forte of the C902. There's no Xenon flash, but Sony Ericsson has packed the handset with a whole host of features. Anything seen before in a Cyber-shot phone, you can bank your bottom dollar that it's here in the C902. BestPic has always been one of 3G.co.uk's favourite camera features, and it continues to impress. Switch it on via the settings menu and each time you shape up to take a shot, the C902 will quickly take nine shots in one rapid burst, before giving you the option of selecting the best one. It's great for shooting moving objects or sporting events for example.

Face Detection is another stirring feature. Once again, switch it on via the settings menu and the C902 will cleverly pick up to three faces in any one shot. The results are that each face will be clearly in focus, providing better detail. X-Pict Story is a fun feature that allows you to create a slideshow of your pics to the accompaniment of various mood-orientated soundtracks, such as romantic, happy or sad, while Photo fix alters the lighting balance, brightness and contrast to give an even better-looking photograph. When using the C902's 2.5x digital zoom, we were a tad disappointed to find that the image appeared grainy as we zoomed in. However, we were relieved to find that when you take the photograph it actually appears fine. While the handset is no MOTO Z10, the VideoDJ feature gives you an editing suite that allows you to merge various videos, add soundtracks, and cut and trim.

The C902 is fitted with accelerometers that work automatically when viewing your media content. Simply turn the phone onto its side and the screen will transform into a landscape view. The transformation is seamless and is of a real benefit when viewing both your photos and web pages. Geo-tagging is another welcome addition found in the C902. Using the on-board Google Maps, each time you take a photo, it is automatically tagged allowing you to trawl through your photos according to location. This is ideal if you're using your phone to capture some holiday snaps, although it's worth considering that data charges will probably occur depending on what tariff you are on, each time you use the application.

With no GPS built in, the C902's Google Maps uses the triangulation process to locate your position. Triangulation works by locating the three nearest cells to you and then working out your approximate position. This method claims to put you within 1,700 metres of your actual location, which while not as accurate as an actual GPS system is still pretty good. What's more we found that our position tended to be within two streets away, close enough to regain our bearings. In addition, if there is a name of a particular restaurant or bar that you are looking for, then simply type it in and Google Maps will bring up a list of local amenities that matches your keyword - the number of Burger Kings in close proximity to Soho is frankly a little disturbing. Alternatively if you're open to suggestions, simply type in a generic term such as restaurant or bar, for a list of local options. It's a marvellous service; affectively giving you a personal guide inside your pocket, although scrolling around can take a couple of seconds for the map to reconfigure. What's more you're not just restricted to the UK, as Google Maps covers the rest of the world.

Sony Ericsson C902 - PC-like mouse pointer

Surfing the web is an equally joyous experience, due in part to the PC-like mouse pointer, first seen on the Sony Ericsson K660i. While its movement is not as smooth as you find on a PC, it still works well, particularly when gliding to hyperlinks or pictures. With up to 3.6Mbps HSDPA speeds, there's no real lag in moving between web pages, and downloads are equally quick.

Much has been made of Sony Ericsson's decision to keep its Cyber-shot and Walkman ranges as separate entities. Some can't understand why they don't merge the two creating one powerful music and camera phone. While this criticism is arguably justified, the manufacturer's handsets are becoming better rounded. The excellent W890i boasts an impressive 3.2-megapixel camera, and equally, the C902's music player should not be sniffed at. Music is presented in various formats, including artists, albums, podcasts and songs.

The FM radio picked up all the stations we searched for, and the reception remained static free. However, we did have an issue with the headphone connector. While we applaud Sony Ericsson's decision to include a 3.5mm jack headset adaptor, we found that even the slightest nudge of the connector caused a disconnection of the headset. This may have been a specific issue with our handset, but it could still be cause for concern.

Sony Ericsson C902 - Verdict

It's impossible not to like the C902. Its design is minimalist yet slick, straightforward yet innovative and the camera is the most capable that we have encountered on any Cyber-shot to date. Features such as Google Maps and TrackID only add to the entire C902 experience. Even the three games, FotoQuestFishing, Need for Speed ProStreet and DChoc Café Solitaire kept us entertained more than any mobile game really should. If we're looking for criticisms, the lack of Wi-Fi may frustrate the prosumer, and we found that the designated camera button on the side of the handset is in too close proximity to the volume/zoom controls. However, even that makes us feel like we're clutching at straws. To sum up, the biggest compliment we can pay the Sony Ericsson C902 is that we'd be happy to use this as our very own handset.

The fashionable Nokia 5310 XpressMusic ($49.99 with contract) is an inexpensive and attractive music phone that's guaranteed to put smiles on the faces of T-Mobile users looking for a relatively basic handset that also handles music and some messaging.

The candy-bar-style 5310 is mostly gunmetal gray, but there's a splash of bright color along the sides of the screen. (Our test handset had red accents, but you can opt for orange or purple.) Unusually slim for a Nokia model, at 4.1 by 1.8 by .4 inches (HWD), it feels solid yet weighs only 3 ounces. The front of the phone is dominated by a good-looking, bright, 2-inch, 320-by-240-pixel display. Transmission through the microphone was generally good, but was heavily dependent on an at-times-wobbly network. During testing, I experienced some network-related voice issues like extreme compression. The speakerphone is fairly loud, but it's located at the bottom of the phone on the back, so it's way too easy to cover with your hand. There wasn't much noise cancellation in the microphone or speaker.

Being a music phone, Nokia 5310 features a standard 3.5mm headset jack on the top, and also supports mono and stereo Bluetooth headsets. The phone is bundled with a pair of earbuds with a microphone and shirt clip. Nokia's voice-dialing system is usually poor, but the 5310 is set up so that you can't use voice dialing until you have trained the phone, by reading a list of names supplied by Nokia; this seemed to increase the phone's accuracy at guessing what I was trying to dial.

For a lower-end handset, the 5310 provides decent Internet connectivity. T-Mobile's OZ instant-messaging and e-mail clients have been improved from earlier iterations. The IM client lets you log into AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo! all at the same time, and shows your entire AIM buddy list, which is unusual for a feature-phone client. The e-mail client supports a range of popular ISPs, including AOL, EarthLink, Gmail, and Yahoo!, but not generic POP3 mail. It shows messages in text-only format in an attractive, tabbed layout.

The WAP browser is run-of-the-mill; it will try to show desktop-formatted sites, but typically doesn't succeed, and should be used only for mobile-optimized sites. T-Mobile has enhanced the browser with a Java app to let you browse its online store and a number of limited, preprogrammed information sites. But you can't run the superior Opera Mini browser because T-Mobile bars third-party Java programs from accessing the Internet on any of its feature phones. In testing, the phone did well on the JBenchmark Java gaming benchmark tests and on multimedia tests.

The 2-megapixel camera is pretty awful, snapping washed-out, bluish pictures in daylight, and hideously blurry pictures in low light. The 176-by-144, 10-frames-per-second video-recording mode takes compressed, choppy videos with visible color artifacting. The camera is not only disappointing but also difficult to access: In default mode, it requires seven clicks before you can take a shot.

The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic makes solid voice calls and plays music well—plus it's really cute. And at $50 with a contract, it's cheap too. If you care less about looks and more about future-proofing, go for the Nokia 6263: It's equipped for T-Mobile's new 3G network, which could further improve voice quality. But if you want an inexpensive, attractive T-Mobile phone you can groove to, slip a 5310 into your pocket.

Last year’s 6500 came in two versions, the slender Classic and the chunkier Slide. Add 100 to the number and check out this year’s model – not quite size zero but the Slide has certainly been on a diet. And it’s still a contender for the catwalk – black is the new black. It’ll turn heads not only because of its compact size but also because of its eye-catching glossy steel skin. It feels good because of the metal, too, even down to the aluminium direction pad, and it’s nice to use because the slide mechanism is skilfully balanced and the compact keys are just big enough to use.

Thankfully, the look of the 6600 Slide bears no resemblance to the original Nokia 6600 – a phone that was as wide as this one is svelte, like an oval with the ends flattened and with curvy keys and a big joystick in the middle. How times change.

Squeezing a lot into a tiny space is the keynote of this phone. You need to look closely to see the front camera for voice calling, but it’s there (whether you’ll ever use it for video calls is another matter). It is also impressive that Nokia has squeezed four GSM antennae and two 3G antennae into this tiny casing, not to mention the FM radio aerial too. The 3G isn’t the whizziest HSDPA data speed but it’s not really a phone where you’ll want to be displaying detailed web pages – the 2.2-inch screen wouldn’t do it justice. There’s the Opera Mini browser so you can surf the net. Just don’t expect it to be comfortable. Even though it’s metal-clad, the phone is light at just 110g. And although there wasn’t room for GPS, Nokia’s Maps program is on board. However, this is no match for the Maps program on the iPhone, even prior to its GPS-enabled 3G version, partly because the 2.2-inch screen is not big enough for easy map reading. You could connect a GPS device by Bluetooth – Nokia makes one that will do the job – but this seems like a faff.

The phone’s screen is bright and colourful, not least because it’s a 16-million colour display and has decent resolution for its size – 240x320 pixels.

Funky features include a gentle way to reject a call. Tap the screen twice and the incoming ringtone is muted – handy if the phone rings in a meeting but you don’t want to red-button the caller. Instead, they’ll simply think you’re not near the phone as it continues ringing at their end. Some phones, like Nokia’s 8800 Sapphire and the HTC Touch Diamond, offer the same function but is achieved by turning the phone face down, which is more poetic.

Similarly, if you tap the phone’s screen twice in standby, the phone tells you the time and buzzes twice. It’s a tiny detail but typical of what makes the phone enjoyable to use. The same tapping quells an alarm and these effects are achieved using an accelerometer, just like on the Sony Ericsson K850i where the phone knows which way up it is.

The front of the 6600 when the slide is closed is pleasingly spare. Beneath the screen is a direction pad and two rocker buttons – the top half acts as a soft key for the function described on the screen above, and the bottom half starts or ends a call.

The central, square direction pad is black with a neat turquoise edging. It uses a simple array of shortcuts – down for contacts, left for messaging, right for calendar and up for camera. Like many direction pads that also have a central push-in button, it’s sometimes easy to mis-press it, which is annoying.

The camera is a decent 3.2-megapixel resolution, with features like sepia and negative effects, and it can also shoot video. What’s more, although there’s only a regular LED flash (i.e no Xenon), the camera has auto-focus – a real step up from the fixed-focus of many phone snappers.

Our handset came with a whopping six games on board, including Snake 3 and Sudoku. Rally 3D was a basic racer where the main fun seemed to stem from the haptic response that told you when you careered off the road.

Nokia’s chargers have changed little over the past few years, and when the current thinner one replaced the larger round charger, Nokia thoughtfully included a connector to bridge the gap. However, the 6600 Slide uses the charger found on relatively few of its handsets. It’s almost a mini-USB connector, but not quite. This is disappointing as not only do older chargers not work, a regular USB cable doesn’t fit either.

The menus are the standard Series 40 icons – nothing surprising here apart from the Maps icon that is not common, but as usual with Nokia non-smartphones, it’s speedily responsive. The contacts list doesn’t spring into life as quickly as on some Nokias but it still beats most other brands out there. Handy if you’re in a desperate hurry to phone a friend.

The 6600 Slide includes Nokia’s Music Player, although you’ll need a memory card to use it as the internal memory is tiny at just 18MB.

Music is important on a phone like this, and it’s definitely a device to be seen with, whether you’re listening to your tracks or not.
