Sony Ericsson brings motion sensing games to the mobile

Sony Ericsson has unveiled a new games oriented mobile phone, which comes complete with Wii-like motion sensing capabilities.

The Sony Ericsson F305 includes motion sensor technology to detect movements which are then incorporated into game actions, like bowling a ball. The handset also includes dedicated gaming buttons and stereo speakers to enhance games playing.

Husni Al Assi, general manager of Sony Ericsson MENA commented: "Gaming is no longer something you do on your own. It's about having fun with your friends and interacting with the game. We have used motion sensor technology before in our phones and integrating it into gameplay is a natural progression."

The slider form factor handset has a 176x220 pixel TFT screen, 2 megapixel camera and quad band connectivity, with support for the memory stick micro format.

Sony Ericsson also plans to release a key-ring sized battery pack, which will add to the phone's normal eight hours of talk or playing time. The phone is due for release in Q3 of this year.

Sony Ericsson appears to want to be number one for mobile phone gaming

Sony Ericsson appears to want to be number one for mobile phone gaming takes up the mobile gaming gauntlet with new mobile gaming phone range.

Is Sony Ericsson aiming to become a mobile phone gaming brand? the latest deal that they have struck with Gestruetek, a Californain software company, would appear to give a positive answer to that question.

The principal behind the software is to turn the mobile phone’s camera into a motion control sensor. Sony already have a relationship with Gestruetek because their software is already in use on Sony’s Eyetoy for the Playstaion 2; it is reported that it will work both on previous Sony Ericsson models such as the Sony Ericsson W910i and all future new models. Rumours indicate that the software will be available from September 2008.

Nokia have tried for a number of years to make a success of a mobile phone as a mobile gaming device introducing the likes of the N-Gage with limited success now with Sony Ericsson using Sony’s Playstaion experience there is every chance that we will be seeing in the not to distant future a mobile phone handset that is a Playstaion and once the concept is proven there are sure to be plenty of games made available.

Apple, LG and Samsung will be watching developements closely because the design of their expensive handsets will surely be able to be adapted to incorporate a mobile games platform.
